  • Publication number: 20140147507
Abstract: An oxygen delivery system is disclosed. The basis of the oxygen deliver system is a carbide-derived carbon (CDC). The CDC can be tuned to carry O2 directly (CDC OC), or hemoglobin can be adsorbed to provide a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (CDC HBOC). The delivery system allows the use of a variety of hemoglobins which differ in their oxygen dissociation profiles, including variant and mutant hemoglobins from other species. The delivery system is biocompatible and stable, and is able to irreversibly bind and hold large amounts of functional hemoglobin variants. The CDC HBOC and CDC OC provide a safe and effective blood substitute for combat casualty care, as well as being useful for oxygen delivery in other contexts.

  • Patent number: 8717577
Abstract: The invention allows a shearography system to successfully sense ground/surface vibrations while moving at aircraft speeds and altitudes. This is done by effectively making stationary the apparent location of a coherent laser beam illuminating an area on the ground/surface, and also effectively making stationary the apparent location of the aperture of an optical receiver which acquires pairs of sequential images captured and used for shearography. A different laser is used for capturing each of the two images, and the distance between the two lasers is adjusted based on a number of operational parameters. The adjustment of the distance causes the apparent locations of the transmitter and a receiver sub-aperture to remain the same and permits the moving shearography to work.

  • Patent number: 8715505
Abstract: A desalination apparatus is disclosed which uses a salt sponge unit to remove a majority of salt from water. A parallel plate capacitor can be connected after the salt sponge to remove remaining salt ions. The salt sponge is a nanoporous, high surface area carbon scaffold to which crown ethers are attached. A power supply is connected to the salt sponges for applying a bias voltage to regenerate the salt sponges. A chlorine treatment unit can be connected after the parallel plate capacitor. A method of purifying sea water using the apparatus also is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8716680
Abstract: A system and method for improving the survivability of space systems following a High Altitude Nuclear Explosion (HANE) incident resulting in energetic electrons being trapped in the inner radiation belt of Earth is disclosed. The ULF electromagnetic waves is generated by space or ground based transmitters and the frequency range is selected such that the injected waves are in gyrofrequency resonance with trapped energetic particles. The Radiation Belt Remediation (RBR) depends on the wave-number of the injected waves and the wave-number of the injected waves increases along their propagation path when they approach the cyclotron frequency of the dominant or minority ions 0+, He+ and H+.

  • Patent number: 8708342
Abstract: A pneumatically controlled, two part, rotational face seal is disclosed that has dual modes of operation. There is a first, static mode where a face of each of the two parts of the seal touch each other and provide an air, liquid and water vapor tight, very low leakage rate with high rotational friction between the two parts of the seal. In the second, dynamic mode wherein the two parts of the seal are separated by inert gas and the face seal functions as a gas bearing having very low rotational friction as the two parts are rotated with respect to each other. One part of the seal may be attached to a rotatable turret and the other part may be attached to a base on which the turret is mounted.

  • Publication number: 20140107970
Abstract: A specific emitter identification (SEI) method and apparatus is capable of identifying and tracking objects within a geographical area of interest wherein the system and method has not been preprogrammed to look for particular signals. The system and method receives all of the emitted electromagnetic signals emitted from area of interest. The system and method next performs high order statistical analysis on the received signals and determines which signals emanate from possible targets of interest and which likely emanate from background clutter/noise by comparing the relative degrees of Gaussianness of the signals (for example using entropy measurements). The least Gaussian signals are deemed to likely be signals from potential targets of interest while those which are more Gaussian are deemed to be likely from background clutter or noise.
