Publication number: 20150021034Abstract: Systems, devices and methods for strands of conductor oriented in a first direction; and strands of soft magnetic material oriented in a second direction that is different from the first direction evaluating a downhole fluid from a borehole intersecting an earth formation. The method may include filtering magnetic particles in the downhole fluid by activating a switchable magnetic filter when the downhole fluid enters a sample chamber in the borehole. The downhole fluid may include formation fluid. The filter may include a wire mesh comprising strands of conductor oriented in a first direction; and strands of soft magnetic material oriented in a second direction. The method may also include cleaning the switchable magnetic filter by deactivating the switchable magnetic filter. Cleaning the switchable magnetic filter may include removing filtered particles using a fluid. The fluid may be at least one of: i) the downhole fluid; and ii) engineered fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2013Publication date: January 22, 2015Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATIONInventor: Thomas Kruspe

Publication number: 20140069639Abstract: A friction reduction assembly for a downhole tubular. The friction reduction assembly includes an electrically activated friction reduction sub. The sub includes a flowbore fluidically connected to a flowbore of the tubular and remaining open for fluid flow therethrough during both activated and non-activated states of the friction reduction sub. A friction reducer responsive to an indication of lockup of the tubular, wherein friction between the tubular and surrounding casing or borehole is reduced in an electrically activated state of the friction reduction sub. A method of reducing friction in a downhole tubular is also included.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 10, 2012Publication date: March 13, 2014Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATIONInventors: Gordon R. Publication number: 20120273199Abstract: A bridge plug assembly having a nickel titanium alloy flexible member that can be selectively radially expanded so its outer surface sealingly engages a surrounding tubular. The flexible member can comprise an annular membrane like member having coaxial rings on the opposing ends of the flexible member. The percentage of weight of nickel can range up to about 40 to about 58%, 55% or to about 60%.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 27, 2010Publication date: November 1, 2012Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATIONInventors: Gary Cresswell, Freeman Hill, William Befeld, Gregory Rinberg, Dan Raz, Michael Goldstein

Publication number: 20110220362Abstract: Porous objects, such as porous balls, may be employed within telescoping devices to control proppant flowback through a completed well during production. The telescoping devices may connect a reservoir face to a production liner without perforating. Acid-soluble plugs initially disposed within the telescoping devices may provide enough resistance to enable the telescoping devices to extend out from the production liner under hydraulic pressure. The plugs may then be dissolved in an acidic solution, which may also be used as the hydraulic extension fluid. After the plugs are substantially removed from the telescoping devices, the reservoir may be hydraulically fractured using standard fracturing processes. The porous balls may then be inserted into the telescoping devices to block proppant used in the fracturing process from flowing out of the reservoir with the production fluids.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 14, 2010Publication date: September 15, 2011Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporationInventors: Tianping Huang, Richard YingQing Xu

Publication number: 20110061292Abstract: Reacting an alkylene carbonate, such as ethylene carbonate, with dimer acid in the presence of a catalyst, such as a tertiary amine catalyst, gives a dimer acid diester having essentially no sulfur, and thus may be added to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel downstream of a refinery. The diester enhances the lubricity properties of hydrocarbon fuels, increases their service life and fuel efficiency. The manufacturing process time may be decreased significantly compared with a process using ethylene glycol instead of ethylene carbonate, and much less ethylene glycol by-product results.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 3, 2010Publication date: March 17, 2011Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporationInventors: Viet Q. Publication number: 20110017475Abstract: A bridge plug assembly that can be set in a wellbore tubular using wellbore pressure to form a pressure differential on a piston that actuates sliding members. A resilient member, such as a spring, is compressed from a downhole pressure differential. The bridge plug assembly can be removed by equalizing pressure across the piston and the spring. The spring can expand and re-stow the expanded plug. The plug can be formed from a nickel titanium alloy flexible member that can be selectively radially expanded so its outer surface sealingly engages a surrounding tubular. The percentage of weight of nickel can range up to about 40 to about 58%, 55% or to about 60%.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2010Publication date: January 27, 2011Applicant: BAKER HUGHES INCORPORATIONInventors: Gary Cresswell, Freeman Hill, William Befeld, Gregory Rinberg, Dan Raz, Michael Goldstein

Publication number: 20030193662Abstract: The invention relates to refractometry and attenuated reflectance spectrometry in a wellbore environment. Specifically, it pertains to a robust apparatus and method for measuring refractive index of fluids along a continuum (rather than in steps), and for measuring attenuated reflectance spectra, and for interpreting the measurements made with this apparatus to determine a variety of formation fluid parameters. The present invention provides a method and apparatus to distinguish between gas and liquid based on the much lower index of refraction of gas. It can also be used to monitor fluid sample clean up over time. The refractive index of a wellbore fluid is determined from the fraction, R, of light reflected off the interface between a transparent window that has a known refractive index and this fluid. Preferably, the refractive index is measured at some wavelength of light for which the fluid is not highly attenuating.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 10, 2002Publication date: October 16, 2003Applicant: Baker Hughes IncorporationInventors: Rocco DiFoggio, Arnold Walkow, Paul Bergren
