  • Patent number: 6050572
Abstract: A rotary cartridge seal is provided which includes a cold flowable plastic ring having a body for sealably engaging the housing bore and a lip for sealably engaging a shaft rotating within the housing bore. A separable metal retainer is provided for fixing the plastic ring within the housing bore and around the shaft with the separable metal retainer having a surface of revolution with a rear portion having a radius suitable for press fitting into the housing bore and a front portion of lesser diameter ending therein. An internal groove is provided into the plastic ring body for engaging the ring therein in order to latch the plastic ring and the metal retainer together with residual stress in both the axial and radial directions within the plastic ring due to groove and ring dimensions and shape.

  • Patent number: 5992856
Abstract: A seal assembly suitable for static, rotary and reciprocating sealing between the shaft and the housing is provided and includes a seal ring in the shape of an annulus having a body portion with an inside flange and an outside flange extending axially therefrom and establishing a ring seal cavity therebetween. An inside annular spring is disposed in the cavity for biasing the inside flange against the shaft to provide the dynamics seal therebetween. An outside annular spring is also disposed in the cavity for biasing the outside flange against the housing to provide a static seal therebetween and prevent the rotation of the seal ring. A band is disposed in the cavity in between the inside and outside springs for enabling the inside and outside springs to independently bias the inside flange and outside flange, respectively.

  • Patent number: 5984316
Abstract: A seal assembly is provided for static, rotary and reciprocating sealing between the shaft and the housing. The seal assembly includes a ring seal in the shape of an annulus having a body portion with an inside flange and an outside flange extending longitudinally therefrom. A spring is disposed between the flanges for radially biasing the flanges from one another to effect sealing between the shaft and the housing and a circular band disposed between the spring and the outside flange is provided for maintaining radial force against the outside flange to retain the ring within the housing and provide static sealing between the ring seal and the housing despite shrinkage of the fluoropolymer seal ring.

  • Patent number: 5979904
Abstract: A seal assembly is provided for rotary and reciprocating sealing between a shaft and a housing. The seal assembly includes a seal ring in the shape of an annulus having a body portion with an inside flange and an outside flange extending longitudinally therefrom. A body portion of the seal ring has a smooth cylindrical exterior surface and the seal ring is formed from a compressible moldable material. A spring is provided and disposed between the flanges for outwardly biasing the flanges from one another to enable sealing between the shaft and the housing. A band is provided and disposed externally around the body portion for holding the seal ring within the housing. A bond is provided between the band and the seal ring by way of striations and grooves which enable the seal ring material to compressibly mold into the band to provide a bond therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5791638
Abstract: Spring apparatus is provided which includes coil springs having intermediate and end coils suitable for interconnection in order to form a continuous spring which maintains a constant load-deflection characteristic over all intermediate coils unaffected by the joint end coils. This configuration therefore finds particular utility in providing bias without compromise of sealing, electromagnetic shielding and/or conductivity.

  • Patent number: 5599027
Abstract: A gasket assembly for sealing electromagnetic waves includes a canted-coil spring for blocking the propagation of electromagnetic waves therepast. The canted-coil spring includes a plurality of individual coils canted along a centerline thereof. A groove is provided for supporting the coil spring in a position enabling loading of the coil spring along a selected direction. The groove is provided with a selected surface for causing individual coils to always turn in a selected angular direction in order to control electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of the coil spring.

  • Patent number: 5575487
Abstract: Circular ring apparatus for static sealing includes a circular ring seat having a shoulder with a flat surface of revolution disposed at an acute angle to a center line of the seat and subtending, through an arcuate surface, a seat bottom disposed at a right angle to the ring seat center line along with a sealing ring having an exterior surface of revolution disposed at an acute angle to a center line of the sealing ring, the sealing ring exterior surface acute angle being different from the ring seat flat surface acute angle. The sealing ring has a height, measured along the sealing ring center line, different than a height of the ring seat, measured along the ring seat center line, and a ring seat assembled position with the ring seat in which the sealing ring center line and the ring seat center line are coaxial, the sealing ring exterior surface abuts the ring seat shoulder and a portion of the sealing ring exterior surface abuts the ring seat arcuate surface and ring seat bottom.

  • Patent number: 5545842
Abstract: A mechanism for connecting and disconnecting, locking and unlocking, and holding members to one another, including snap-on fasteners, and at the same time providing mechanical, electromagnetic shielding, electrical conductivity, and thermal dissipation, coupled with environmental sealing, is provided by a cylindrical or elliptical body having a circumferential groove therein and a continuous coil spring disposed therein. A housing, having a bore sized to accommodate the cylindrical, or spherical, body, is provided, and a tapered bottom in the circumferential groove prevents the spring from turning past a vertical line, thus locking or connecting the cylindrical, or spherical, member with the housing or plate.
