Patent number: 4167338Abstract: A method for determining the quantity ratio of two components of a multi-substance mixture whose absorption bands are adjacent to each other and overlap comprises using an interference filter which is rotated in a uniform rotation about a first axis through the filter plane which forms with a perpendicular erected on the filter plane a fixed angle .beta. which is not equal to zero. The filter is rotatably arranged about a second axis through the filter plane and the method is characterized by adjusting the angle .alpha. which the axis of rotation forms with the ray in the range of .beta. is less than .alpha. so that a signal corresponding to the first derivative of the spectral intensity distribution of the radiation transmitted by the substance mixture just passes through zero and a quantity correlated with this angle is used as a measure of the quantity ratio.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1977Date of Patent: September 11, 1979Assignee: Balzers Patent- und Beteiligungs AktiengesellschaftInventor: Thaddaus Kraus

Patent number: 4135895Abstract: A pump for the treatment of gases with a sorbent material in an evacuated chamber comprises a housing which has a plurality of stacked plates which define a continuous upwardly extending path for the sorbent material which is made up of successive spirals. At least some of the spirals are spaced vertically apart to define a sorption zone permitting the passage of gases to be treated over the sorbent material. In addition the stacked plates also define a closed path in the housing leading from the sorption zone and out of the housing for discharing desorbed gases. The housing is vibrated by a vibration drive applied to effect upward movement of the sorbent material and a downcomer pipe or return pipe extends through the plates for returning the sorbent material from the upper portion of the path back to the location of the bottom of the sorbent material path. The sorbent material is continuously moved upwardly through the housing on the plates by vibrating the housing to effect such movement.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1977Date of Patent: January 23, 1979Assignee: Balzers Patent- und Beteiligungs-AktiengesellschaftInventor: Thaddaus Kraus

Patent number: 4101200Abstract: A light transmitting, absorbing coating is produced on a substrate by depositing layers of silicon in an oxidizing residual gas atmosphere and chrome in a non-oxidizing residual gas atmosphere in alternate layers cathode sputtering. The light transmitting layer comprises a substrate having a coating of a bluish-grey transmission color which comprises a plurality of alternate chrome and silicon dioxide layers with the thickness of the individual chrome layers being smaller than 10 nm.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1976Date of Patent: July 18, 1978Assignee: Balzers Patent-und Beteiligungs-AktiengesellschaftInventor: Helmut Daxinger

Patent number: 4083231Abstract: The self-calibrating leak detector circuit arrangement comprises a measuring probe for generating an electrical signal when exposed to the leaking gas. A measuring amplifier is connected to the probe for amplifying the electrical signal and a second integrating amplifier stage is connected to the measuring amplifier output for amplifying the signal. The second amplifier stage has a feedback connection to the input of the measuring amplifier for counteracting at least a part of the electrical signal from the probe. A push button switch is advantageously connected between the measuring amplifier and the second amplifier stage to momentarily impress the output of the measuring amplifier on the input of the second integrating amplifier stage. Indicators are connected to the outputs of the respective amplifiers for a reading of their respective outputs.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1976Date of Patent: April 11, 1978Assignee: Balzers Patent-und Beteiligungs-AktiengesellschaftInventor: Hermann Mennenga

Patent number: 4059067Abstract: An apparatus for determining the rate of flow of particles in a vacuum deposition device using the relationship that the rate of flow of the particles is equal to the density of the particle current times the mean velocity of the particles comprises establishing a flow or current of particles in the device and the directing of a laser beam through the current of particles in order to measure the attenuation of the beam after it has passed through the particles and thus to determine the vapor density within the current. The absorption wavelength shift of the laser beam provides an indication of the velocity component of the current because the shift is produced by a Doppler effect by the velocity component of the particle current in the direction of flow from the source of the particles to the substrate to be coated.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1976Date of Patent: November 22, 1977Assignee: Balzers Patent-Und Beteiligungs-AktiengesellschaftInventors: Marcel Lardon, Hans Pulker
