The apparatus includes a detection system configured to detect transverse displacement of each edge of a portion of the conveyor belt as the conveyor belt travels past the detection system, and determine, using the transverse displacements of the edges of the conveyor belt and one or more operating rules, if an operating irregularity of the conveyor belt has occurred.
