Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing a thread from staple fibers by the open-end or round-about spinning methods wherein the individual fibers are transported by an air stream to the thread forming zone in the nip between two air-permeable rollers with suction applied from within the rollers, characterized by the use of a fiber-transporting air stream directed at an angle of impingement with reference to the thread forming zone of less than 45.degree., preferably 10.degree. or even less, with a vector of movement of the air stream being counter to the thread draw-off direction. An improved thread or yarn product is obtained by this process, being more compact and free of loose fibers.
