Abstract: A rotating riffler for the purpose of withdrawing smaller laboratory-sized representative particulate samples from larger samples. This comprises a rotating disk having an interchangeable top plate of plastic foam having openings therein to accommodate sample containers. Where different size sample containers are employed, the plastic foam plate is changed to accommodate them. The rotating disk is mounted on a base containing a variable speed drive and is supported at the periphery by bearings rather than by the shaft. A slurry or dry volume of particles of which a smaller representative sample is required, is fed into a funnel-like device, then drops in a controlled flow into the sampling containers rotating below the funnel. "V"-shaped bridging devices having curved legs are attached between each pair of containers to prevent spilling.

Abstract: Anti-static polymeric films, fibers and textile yarn produced by process comprising admixing a branched chain, sulfur-containing polyester with a synthetic film- or fiber-forming polymer, extruding said film or textile fiber, and exposing said film or textile fiber to an aqueous solution containing a polyvalent metal ion reactive with the sulfate groups present in said sulfur-containing polyester. The sulfur-containing polyester is thereby fixed within the synthetic film or fiber and is resistant to extraction by water or commonly used dry cleaning solvents.

Abstract: An aqueous solution containing from 0.81 to 1.3 moles of piperazine per liter is used as a washing agent for removing impurities such as H.sub.2 S, CO.sub.2 and COS from gases. Piperazine can also be used, in amounts of up to 0.8 mole per liter, together with physical or chemical solvents, to accelerate the absorption of H.sub.2 S, CO.sub.2 and COS. The washing process is used for natural gases, coke-oven gases, gases from the gasification of coal and synthesis gases, of any origin.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a mixture of linear three-block copolymers which contain from 70 to 80% by weight of styrene units and from 20 to 30% by weight of elastomeric polymer segments based on a conjugated diene, in a total of three stages, specific conditions in respect of the initiator and of the monomers to be polymerized being essential in the individual stages in order to ensure the polymodal structure of the three-block copolymers. After complete reaction of the monomers, the mixture of the living polymers is treated with proton-active compounds, and the mixture of the block copolymers is isolated by removing the solvent. The compositions obtained by the novel process are transparent and clear and have good mechanical properties. They are furthermore readily processable by the methods conventionally used for thermoplastics. The compositions are particularly suitable for the production of moldings and of packaging materials.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of 6-membered cyclic acetals of trans-4-chloro-3-methyl-but-2-en-1-al by reacting the corresponding acetals of 3-methyl-but-2-en-1-al (prenal), in a halohydrocarbon, with sulfuryl chloride and for their subsequent oxidation to trans-3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-1-monoacetals (3-methyl-fumarodialdehyde-1-monoacetals). The trans-3-methyl-but-2-ene-1,4-dial-1-monoacetals are of great importance in terpene syntheses, since they make it possible to carry out successive Wittig reactions giving a very large number of compounds of biological and pharmacological importance.
