Abstract: A simulated fuel element for a fuel effect fire comprises a body of foam material shaped and coloured to resemble a piece of real fuel, such as a log. The foam material may be a polyurethane foam. The fuel element is substantially non-translucent of light and may be provided with a hollow interior for the transmission of light from a light source of a fuel effect fire, giving a glowing appearance to the fuel element. The fuel element may also include crevices with which may also transmit light from the light source. Transmitted light may be reflected from dark reflective surfaces to enhance the burning appearance of the fuel element. Colour filters or the like may be used to provide coloured light incident on the fuel elements.
