Patent number: 7639119Abstract: A system and method of inventorying multiple objects utilizing a multi-level or a chained radio frequency identification system. The system includes a master tag and a plurality of upper level tags and lower level tags associated with respective objects. The upper and lower level tags communicate with each other and the master tag so that reading of the master tag reveals the presence and absence of upper and lower level tags. In the chained RF system, the upper and lower level tags communicate locally with each other in a manner so that more remote tags that are out of range of some of the upper and lower level tags have their information relayed through adjacent tags to the master tag and thence to a controller.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2007Date of Patent: December 29, 2009Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventors: Curtis L. Patent number: 7180402Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) communication system employs phase-modulated backscatter signals for RF communication from an RF tag to an interrogator. The interrogator transmits a continuous wave interrogation signal to the RF tag, which based on an information code stored in a memory, phase-modulates the interrogation signal to produce a backscatter response signal that is transmitted back to the interrogator. A phase modulator structure in the RF tag may include a switch coupled between an antenna and a quarter-wavelength stub; and a driver coupled between the memory and a control terminal of the switch. The driver is structured to produce a modulating signal corresponding to the information code, the modulating signal alternately opening and closing the switch to respectively decrease and increase the transmission path taken by the interrogation signal and thereby modulate the phase of the response signal. Alternatively, the phase modulator may include a diode coupled between the antenna and driver.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2004Date of Patent: February 20, 2007Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventors: Curtis Lee Carrender, Ronald W. Patent number: 7009515Abstract: A radio-frequency identification (RFID) interrogator is provided that generates pseudo-randomly selected radio frequency interrogation signals for transmission on a first antenna and receives the reflected modulated radio-frequency signals via continuous-wave backscatter from a RFID tag device through a second antenna coupled to a heterodyne receiver where data is extracted. The RFID tag device can be configured to write data as well as have data read therefrom by the interrogator. The frequency-hopping transmission in combination with the heterodyne reception provides higher power levels with substantially reduced interference, as well as the ability to link with bounced signals at certain frequencies, increasing the level of communication in the RFID system.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2001Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventor: Curtis Lee Carrender

Patent number: 6995652Abstract: A system and method for controlling remote devices utilizing a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag device having a control circuit adapted to render the tag device, and associated objects, permanently inoperable in response to radio-frequency control signals. The control circuit is configured to receive the control signals that can include an enable signal, and in response thereto enable an associated object, such as a weapon; and in response to a disable signal, to disable the tag itself, or, if desired, to disable the associated weapon or both the device and the weapon. Permanent disabling of the tag can be accomplished by several methods, including, but not limited to, fusing a fusable link, breaking an electrically conductive path, permanently altering the modulation or backscattering characteristics of the antenna circuit, and permanently erasing an associated memory.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2001Date of Patent: February 7, 2006Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventors: Curtis Lee Carrender, Ronald W. Patent number: 6868073Abstract: A method and system can locate an RF transponder based on phase differences between signals transmitted to the RF transponder. The method transmits from a first transponder to a second transponder first and second signals at first and second frequencies, respectively. The second signal is compared with the first signal and a distance between the first and second transponders is determined based on the phase difference between the first and second signals. In one embodiment, the first transponder is an interrogator, the second transponder is an RF tag, and the RF tag determines the phase difference between the two signals. In another embodiment, the first and second transponders are the interrogator and RF tag, respectively, but the interrogator determines the phase difference between the two signals after the two signal are reflected back to the interrogator.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2000Date of Patent: March 15, 2005Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventor: Curtis Lee Carrender

Patent number: 6852328Abstract: A method and device are disclosed which prevents the decay and deterioration of wooden objects caused by pests by using a controlled release device. This controlled release device utilizes polymers which incorporate pesticides. In the disclosed method, the controlled release device is placed in contact with the wood of the wooden object. The pesticide is gradually released from the device and absorbed into the wood structure. The pesticide absorbed by the wood creates a barrier or an exclusion zone to penetration by inserts. The controlled release device maintains a minimal effective level of pesticide in the barrier or exclusion zone for a predetermined period of time.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1996Date of Patent: February 8, 2005Assignee: Battelle Memorial Institute K1-53Inventors: Peter Van Voris, Dominic A.
