Patent number: 7316083Abstract: The invention relates to a lasted footwear for enclosing a human foot having a heel, an ankle and medial and lateral sides. The footwear comprises an outer shell for receiving the foot and an inner lining mounted in the outer shell. The inner lining is less rigid than the outer shell and has an inner surface adapted to contact the foot in use and an outer surface being affixed to the outer shell. The outer shell is made of a multi-layer composite sheet that is thermoformed for defining a foot-receiving cavity having a three-dimensional geometry that conforms to the foot. The multi-layer composite sheet has a first layer of thermoformable foam having a core and first and second opposite surfaces and a second layer of fibers. One of the first and second opposite surfaces of the layer of thermoformable foam has a skin formed by exposing the surface to temperatures between 200° F. and 300° F. The invention also relates to a method of making a lasted skate boot comprising such an outer shell.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2004Date of Patent: January 8, 2008Assignee: Bauer Nike Hockey Inc.Inventor: Ivan Labonté´

Patent number: 7290355Abstract: A skate boot for enclosing a human foot having a forefoot and a front ankle portion. The skate boot has a tongue comprising a first section and a second section. The first section covers the forefoot of the foot and the second section is connected to the first section via a flexing zone that enables the second section to be movable in relation to the first section between a first position and a second position. In the first position the second section covers a portion of the front ankle portion of the foot, and in the second position, the second section overlaps a portion of the first section.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2004Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: Bauer Nike Hockey Inc.Inventor: Ivan Labonté

Patent number: 7261787Abstract: The invention provides a method of making a formable hockey stick blade, the method comprising: (a) providing a core having a blade element with a thickness, the core being made of expandable foam having a Poisson ratio of at least 0.33; (b) forming a preformed stick blade by wrapping the core with a layer of fibers pre-impregnated with a thermoplastic material; (c) placing the preformed stick blade in a mold; (d) applying heat and pressure to the mold for bringing the thermoplastic material to its amorphous form and for compressing the preformed stick blade such that the thickness of the blade element of the core is reduced; (e) cooling the mold such that the thermoplastic material is set; and (f) removing the formable stick blade from the mold.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2004Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignee: Bauer Nike Hockey Inc.Inventors: Alain Bellefleur, Win Fream, Robert M. Miller, Vincent Borbone

Patent number: 7047566Abstract: The present invention provides a leg pad comprising a shin guard and a strap. The strap comprises a first section, a second section and a third section. The first section affixes the strap to the shin guard and comprises a rear surface for facing the shin guard and a front surface that comprises a front affixing portion. The second section extends from the first section and comprises a rear surface. The third section extends from the second section and comprises a rear surface that has a rear affixing portion. In use, the rear surface of the second section faces a back portion of the wearer's leg and the third section at least partially overlaps the first section such that the user can engage the rear affixing portion with the front affixing portion for securing the leg pad to the leg.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 2003Date of Patent: May 23, 2006Assignee: Bauer Nike Hockey Inc.Inventors: Jean-François Béland, Dominique Plante

Patent number: 7013487Abstract: A method of making a protective pad, which comprises fastening a plurality of sections together to create an outer shell, providing an inner shell made of a more rigid material than the sections making up the outer shell, fastening the inner shell to the outer shell (thereby to form a composite shell) and fastening the composite shell to a padding liner. The use of plural sections forming the outer shell reduces manufacturing costs. An overlay may be placed over the outer shell to conceal the areas where the sections making up the outer shell are fastened together. Fastening the composite shell to the padding liner may include passing through a thinned out portion of the hard inner shell, or it may bypass the inner shell altogether, thus avoiding the use of heavy duty stitching equipment. The step of fastening the inner and outer shells may include gluing rather than stitching.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2003Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: Bauer Nike Hockey Inc.Inventor: Jean-François Béland

Patent number: 6981284Abstract: A hockey helmet for receiving a head of a wearer, the head having a crown region, left and right side regions, a back region and an occipital region. The helmet comprises a shell comprising left and right side inner surfaces and left and right side inner pads at least partially covering the inner left and right side surfaces of the shell, the left and right side inner pads facing the respective left and right side regions of the head. The helmet also comprises a wedging member located between one of the left and right side inner pads and one of the respective left and right side inner surfaces. The wedging member is movable between first and second positions, wherein, in the first position, one of the left and right side inner pads apply a first pressure upon the respective left and right side regions of the head, and in the second position, one of the left and right side inner pads apply a second pressure upon the respective left and right side regions of the head.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2003Date of Patent: January 3, 2006Assignee: BAUER NIKE Hockey Inc.Inventor: Jacques Durocher
