  • Patent number: 6537186
Abstract: A process of manufacturing composite filter stock is provided that includes several steps. In a first step, a paper carrier strip feeds along a conveyor. Along one edge of the carrier strip, the paper is folded back against itself. Fibrous filter segments are then deposited on the carrying strip in spaced apart intervals. The spacing defines cavities between adjacent filter segments. The carrier strip with the deposited filter segments is fed along a path of travel into an elongated guide or support chamber that substantially surrounds the circumference of the paper-enveloped segments and which leaves a narrow fill opening opposite an elongated particulate filling opening that is elongated in the direction of motion of the carrying strip. Suction or a vacuum is concurrently applied adjacent the narrow opening, the suction increasing a downward momentum of a gravity feed stream of particulate matter and concurrently vacuums away loose particulate matter.

  • Patent number: 5896861
Abstract: The process serves to more precisely aromatize and/or remove certain smoke fume constituents from tobacco smoke or tobacco smoke drawn from a cigarette, by means of a flowable carrier material or filtration material for aromatizing products, arranged in a cavity (1) of a mouthpiece of the cigarette. For this purpose, the flowable active carrier material or filter material (2) for aromatizing products is, before being put into this cavity (1), mixed with at least one flowable material (3) which is inactive with respect to tobacco smoke flowing through to give a mixture which is as homogeneous as possible, and, mixed in this way, is introduced into the cavity (1).

  • Patent number: 4791943
Abstract: In order, when a cigarette is being smoked, to reduce, or even reverse, the tendency of the condensate-content to increase, a cigarette filter unit is proposed in which at least one partition having at least two areas of different porosities and made of a material which allows smoke to pass through it, is arranged between each two filter elements aligned axially with one another in the flow cross section of the filter unit. In this connection, a first partition area is designed in such a manner that its permeability decreases as the portion of tobacco associated with the cigarette filter unit is smoked, the tobacco smoke, passing through the said cigarette filter unit, flowing increasingly through the second partition area.

  • Patent number: 4747418
Abstract: In order to obtain, during the smoking of a cigarette, each time the smoker draws, an amount of condensate which is more constant or is even less than heretofore, there is provided a cigarette filter unit having at least one membrane in the form of a screen positioned across the smoke-gas flow paths, the unit acting, while the cigarette is being smoked, as an internal bypass element. To this end, the spatial distribution of the openings in the membrane, and the cross sectional areas thereof, are accurately determined as to the size and shape. The thickness of the membrane is between 10 and 150 .mu.m, the number of openings therein is between 500 and 25,000, and the cross sectional area of the openings is between 80 and 3,000 .mu.m.sup.2.

  • Patent number: 4501579
Abstract: The invention concerns a method for producing a cigarette filter unit, in which filter elements are disposed on a porous or perforated covering strip and at least partially wrapped thereby and adhesively joined. The adhesive substance is applied to the covering strip along coating tracks which are at least approximately equidistant from each other and extended at an angle to the longitudinal orientation of the covering strip. The filter strand formed in this manner is subdivided by a cutting device.

  • Patent number: 4436517
Abstract: In apparatus for making transverse-flow cigarette filters, a rod of cellulose acetate impregnated with a plasticizing agent and having a porous covering is cut into sections each having a length of several filters. From the cutting station, the rod sections are fed longitudinally into longitudinal grooves in the periphery of a first revolving drum. The rod sections are then transferred into longitudinal grooves in the periphery of a second revolving drum having in such grooves projections for forming indentations in one side of the rod sections. While carried by the second revolving drum, the rod sections are engaged by a third revolving drum having on its periphery projections for forming longitudinally offset indentations in the opposite side of the rod sections. In another embodiment of the apparatus, the rod sections are received in transverse grooves in a conveyor belt, and are transferred in groups between opposed punches which form indentations in opposite sides of the rod sections.

  • Patent number: 4412829
Abstract: For the purpose of producing a cigarette filter unit provided with chambers which are filled with a pourable filter material a filter rope provided with chambers having filling openings which terminate to the outside is conveyed past a filler member provided with a filler opening lying sealingly against the latter. In order to obtain satisfactorily filled chambers even at very high advance speeds of the filter rope, the interior of the first chamber of the filler member which interior is connected to the filler opening is maintained during the filling process at an internal pressure which lies above that of the surrounding atmosphere. When then the chambers to be filled come into connection with the filler opening of the filler member an air stream is effected which, in consequence of the pressure difference thus produced, is directed out of the filler member into the chambers to be filled and which conveys filter material out of the filler member into the chambers to be filled of the filter rope.

  • Patent number: 4338882
Abstract: A plasticizer installation comprises a chamber through which a fibre rope passes in front of a spray device comprising a turbine, connected to a source of high voltage and located between a truly rectilinear path and the actual rope path, which paths define a trapezium. The plasticizer mist carried along by the rope is recovered in a decompression booth. The supply of plasticizer is controlled according to the weight of an intermediate vat also receiving the flow from the booth. The plasticized rope of fibres is intended to be used in the production of cigarette filters.

  • Patent number: 4274317
Abstract: A method of monitoring continuously advancing string material (1) of the kind comprising a continuous alternating succession of string sections, for example a cigarette filter string, of different material and/or structural configuration with regard to cutting the string (1) into identical plugs (7) for checking and correcting the position of each cut. Prior to being cut the string (1) is scanned by a sensor unit (4) which detects the beginning and end of each string section. A device associated with the cutting device (5) generates an output signal to indicate the moment when the string (1) is cut. Between this output signal and the moment at which the sensor unit (4) issues a signal corresponding to the end of the string section to be cut, a measured value is obtained which is independent of the feed into of the string (1) and which is proportioned to the length of the string section between the two signals.

  • Patent number: 4185645
Abstract: Cigarette filter units are made in a long strip with alternate portions of fibrous and pourable filter material. The fibrous portions are first attached at spaced intervals to a sheathing strip which is wrapped practically right around them to form a cylinder with regular empty spaces between the fibrous portions and openings into the spaces. In a special unit, air is extracted from these spaces so that when the spaces enter a chamber containing pourable filter material, they suck the material in to fully fill the spaces. Excess filter material is brushed off the filter unit, and a sealing strip is stuck over the openings.

  • Patent number: 4164438
Abstract: A method of making a filtering member of cellulose acetate for cigarette filters of the transverse flow type in which a rod formed by a bunch of cellulose acetate fibres coated with plasticizing agent and surrounded by a skin or a paper cover is first cut transversely into shorter lengths at a cutting station. Then with each length in a heated state, a plurality of similar, spaced, co-linear grooves are impressed into the length along each of two diametrically opposed sides thereof as the length is carried by a conveyor arrangement from the cutting station to a processing station. The conveyor arrangement can comprise a driven train of fluted transfer drums receiving the lengths in the flutes certain of which have teeth extending along the troughs of those flutes to impress the grooves in the lengths, or can comprise a conveyor belt to receive the lengths in which the grooves are impressed by punches above and below the upper run of the belt.

  • Patent number: 4015610
Abstract: A cigarette filter tip comprises three filter elements disposed end-to-end within a tubular outer coating of transparent sheet material. The two filter elements at the ends of the filter tip are of fibrous material while the central element is granular and comprises an iron sulfate which changes color upon reaction with hydrogensulfide in the cigarette smoke to form an iron sulfide.
