    Abstract: A guidewire having a centrally located core wire about which is mounted a single outer helical coil spring. The core wire is typically longer than the outer helical coil spring, with the helical coil spring and core wire having common distal ends. The spring is brazed at both its distal and proximal end to the core wire. The distal brazing of the core wire and helical coil springs is rounded. A second small radiopaque helical coil spring is fitted in the distal end of the outer helical coil spring and may be brazed to the core wire and outer helical coil spring.

    Abstract: A vacuum air lock assembly for transferring an article into an enclosure for treating the article with a solvent, the enclosure including a door for admitting the article into or out of the enclosure, the assembly including a chamber mounted on the enclosure and having an outer door, the chamber being sealed to the enclosure for transferring the article from the chamber through the enclosure door into the enclosure, a vacuum pump for drawing a vacuum in the chamber and discharging the air to atmosphere, the chamber being connected to the enclosure to break the vacuum in the chamber with solvent vapor from the enclosure, the article is transferred into the enclosure through the enclosure door for treatment and returned to the chamber after treatment, and the solvent vapor in the chamber is returned to the enclosure chamber through the vacuum pump and the vacuum in the chamber is broken to atmosphere.

    Abstract: Improved Implant assemblies and methodologies provide immuno-protection for implanted allografts, xenografts, and isografts. The assemblies and methodologies establish an improved chamber for holding the implanted cells. The chambers include first and second wall elements and an intermediate sealing element. The first and second wall elements overlie an open area in the sealing member to form a chamber for holding cells for implantation. A sealed region is created between the wall elements and the sealing element body to close the chamber. In one arrangement, the sealed region is created by means of a sonic weld made while the implanted cells are present in the chamber. In another arrangement, the sealed region is created by means of applying an external force to compress the peripheral edges of the wall elements and the sealing element together while the implanted cells are present in the chamber.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic ablation device for effecting ultrasonic ablation of intravascular obstructions such as plaque or thrombi. The ultrasonic ablation device has a) an elongate catheter body, b) a wave guide or ultrasound transmission wire extending through the elongate catheter body, and c) a distal head or probe member positioned at the distal end of the catheter body. A guidewire lumen or passageway extends longitudinally through the catheter body and a guidewire aperture or passageway extends through the distal head or probe such that a guidewire may be passed through the distal head or probe and through the catheter body. Also disclosed is an improved distal head or probe which may be incorporated in any elongate ultrasonic ablation device, the improvement comprising the formation of a concavity or indentation in the distal or frontal face of the distal head or probe to improve the cavitation created thereby.

    Abstract: A double pouch is described in which a smaller pouch is located within a larger pouch. The larger pouch can be used to accommodate a patient's leg or other appendage during a surgical procedure while the smaller pouch can be used to retain irrigation fluids and surgical debris. In the preferred embodiment, the smaller pouch can be moved to the outside of the larger pouch when the larger pouch is not intended to be used. In one embodiment, the pouches can be attached to a main drape having a fenestration through which a patient's appendage is inserted.

    Abstract: A device including an integrally formed membrane oxygenator and heat exchange device positioned in a single housing. The device includes a thermally conductive body formed with a plurality of blood pathways on its surface, and a gas permeable membrane, or membranes positioned in the housing in substantial contact with the heat exchange body to cover or lie within a portion of each of the pathways. The membrane defines a gas pathway separate from the blood pathway through which a gas is directed. The blood is directed through the individual blood pathways. The device also includes various ports and passageways for delivering the blood to the individual channels, and for collecting and removing the blood from the device.

    Abstract: An apparatus 10 for driving a plunger 134 of a syringe 16 includes a plate 48 on the top 38 of a frame 36 and a structure 62 on the plate 48 for releasably attaching the cylinder 130 of the syringe 16 to the frame 36 and securing the cylinder 130 against lengthwise movement relative to the frame 36. A lever 76 is pivotably attached to the top 38 of the frame 36 a selected distance from the plate 48. A pair of pivot pins 108,110 releasably pivotably attach the distal end 150 of the plunger 134 of the syringe 16 to the lever 76. In this manner, pivotable movement of the lever 76 is translated into lengthwise movement of the plunger 134. An apparatus 10 for transferring a measured amount of fluid from a first fluid supply 14 to a fluid reservoir 170 includes a syringe 16, the syringe driving apparatus 12 and a two-way check valve 18. The fluid supply 14, the fluid reservoir 70 and the syringe 16 are maintained in fluid communication through the two-way check valve 18.

The platform contains one or more magnets located adjacent to the housing chamber when the housing chamber is positioned on the platform.     Abstract: A process for purifying crude collagenase is disclosed. The collagenase purification process includes providing a stabilized crude collagenase solution containing collagenase, pigment, toxins, bacterial materials, and proteolytic enzyme impurities including clostripain, trypsin, and caseinase. The stabilized collagenase solution is applied to hydroxylapatite packing. pigment and caseinase are eluted with a first solution comprising about 0.05 M to about 0.3 M phosphate buffer, and then collagenase, trypsin, and clostripain are eluted with a second solution comprising about 0.35 M to about 0.5 M phosphate buffer to provide a first collected solution. The first collected solution is then applied to gel filtration packing and collagenase and clostripain are eluted with a neutral pH buffer solution, to provide a second collected solution. The second collected solution is then applied to Reactive Red 120-Agarose packing and collagenase is eluted with a neutral pH buffer solution to provide purified collagenase.

    Abstract: A frangible seal for a fluid path including a frangible seal member secured within a tube defining the fluid path. The frangible seal member having a tubular seal member and a stem extending from the tubular seal member which, upon bending back and forth, breaks away from the seal member thereby to rupture the tubular seal in the fluid path. The tubular seal member and stem are integrally formed of a non-PVC material. The tubular seal member will bond to PVC tubing during steam heating thereof. The tubular seal member and stem are constructed to provide uniform non-reclosable rupturing. The stem includes vanes with spurs that frictionally engage the inner walls of the tube to maintain separation of the stem and ruptured tubular seal member.

    Abstract: A catheter assembly for measuring a fluid pressure in a body cavity includes an optical converter responsive to an electrical power source for energizing a light-emitting diode which has drift characteristics which vary in response to temperature. An optical sensor is adapted to receive the light from the light-emitting diode and to provide a measurement signal indicative of the fluid pressure in the cavity. This measurement signal has undesirable characteristics related to the thermal drift characteristics of the diode. A detection circuit detects the measurement signal and provides an output signal indicative of fluid pressure in the cavity. A special filter is included in this detection circuit which has optical characteristics that substantially offset the undesirable characteristics of the measurement signal, so that the output signal is substantially independent of the temperature of the diode.

Portions of the ultrasound transmission member may be tapered or narrowed. One or more surface disruptions may be formed on the distal head or probe to improve treatment efficacy. An increased hardness coating or outer skin may be formed on the ultrasound transmission member. The device of the present invention may be incorporated into an angioscopic device.

    Abstract: A fully exchangeable over-the-wire dilatation catheter disclosed having an expandable balloon mounted on the distal end of a flexible, elongate tubular shaft provided with first and second through lumens. The first lumen traverses the longitudinal extent of the tubular shaft and is sealingly connected to the expandable balloon. The second lumen is adapted to slidingly receive a guidewire throughout the longitudinal extent of the tubular shaft and through the interior of the expandable balloon. The tubular shaft is also provided with a longitudinal rip seam extending into the second lumen from the proximal portion of the tubular shaft to a point adjacent the distal end of the tubular shaft. The rip seam may be provided with one or more side access ports into the second guidewire lumen and enables the catheter to be peeled from the guidewire during removal and exchange procedures without the need for docking a guidewire extension.
