Abstract: A lancing mechanism for puncturing skin is provided. The lancing mechanism comprises a lance having a penetration end which is adapted to puncture skin. The penetration end of the lance is movable from a first position to a second position during a forward stroke and between the second position and the first position during a return stroke. A forcing plunger applies a force to the lance to move the lance from the first position to the second during the forward stroke. The forcing plunger is adapted to engage the lance during the forward stroke to move the penetration end of the lance from the first position to the second position and to disengage the lance when the penetration end of the lance approaches the second position. A first resilient member coupled to the lance moves the first end of the lance from the second position to the first position during the return stroke.

Abstract: Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a class of fatal, neurodegenerative diseases found in many mammalian species. Human TSEs include kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), and fatal familial insomnia. Non-human TSEs include sheep scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), feline spongiform encephalopathy, and chronic wasting diseases in elk and mule deer. These neurodegenerative diseases are caused by prions and display characteristic amyloid plaque deposition. The only known component of the infectious prion is an abnormal, disease-causing isoform of the prion protein (PrP), called PrP scrapie (PrPSc). During a post-translational process, PrPSc is formed from the normal, cellular PrP isoform (PrPC). The scrapie isoform is less soluble, more proteinase-resistant, and more susceptible to aggregation than the wildtype protein.

Abstract: A process for the work up of a reaction mixture obtained from the preparation of diaryl carbonate by direct carbonylation of aromatic hydroxy compounds is disclosed. The process entails obtaining a reaction mixture that contains diaryl carbonate, aromatic hydroxy compound, water, base and quaternary salt, separating the mixture in a distillation apparatus having only one theoretical separation stage into a liquid phase and a gas phase and recycling the liquid phase without further work up to the reaction step of the direct carbonylation.

Abstract: The invention discloses an improved process for the production of cross-linked rubber particles. The cross-linking agents are added to the aqueous rubber dispersions and converted at relatively high temperatures without inertization of the reaction mix and without pressurizing of an inert gas.
The cross-linked rubber particles are suitable, for example, for the production of technical rubber products and for various tire components.

Abstract: A surface of a canal, ditch or pipe is lined with a polyurethane/geofabric composite. A non-sagging polyurethane composition is applied to the canal, ditch or pipe surface, a geofabric is contacted with that surface in a manner such that the geofabric becomes impregnated with the non-sagging polyurethane composition which cures to form a polyurethane/geofabric composite. The non-sagging polyurethane is a reaction product of a polyisocyanate, a high molecular weight polyhydroxyl compound and a compound having at least 2 amino groups. A low molecular weight diol or triol, filler and catalyst are optional components. These composites are particularly useful in lining cracked or broken concave or angled surfaces.
