The respirator further includes a diffuser allowing for the delivery of oxygen to the patient and the removal of carbon dioxide from the space between the patient's face and the posterior side of the mask body as the patient exhales. The respirator further includes various seals and filter media positioned over apertures or ports within the mask body. The seals and filter media are removable to provide additional access to the patient and to also allow for the connection of medical instruments to the mask.

A barrier layer is selectively deposited on the sidewalls but not on the bottom of the gap. The SAM is removed after selectively depositing the barrier layer on the sidewalls.
