In accordance with a particular embodiment, the method includes receiving a call at the network-based messaging system and providing a notification to a subscriber of the network-based messaging system that the call has been received and that a message for the subscriber is to be recorded. The subscriber is located remotely from the network-based messaging system. In accordance with another particular embodiment, the system includes a computer server and a notification module. The computer server is associated with the remote subscriber terminal and includes a voice message storage unit to store voice messages. The notification module is to notify the remote subscriber terminal when a call is received at the computer server and when a voice message is to be recorded.

The method includes receiving a source speech signal, tagging dialog acts associated with the received source speech signal using a classification model, dialog acts being domain independent descriptions of an intended action a speaker carries out by uttering the source speech signal, producing an enriched hypothesis of the source speech signal incorporating the dialog act tags, and outputting a natural language response of the enriched hypothesis in a target language. Tags can be grouped into sets such as statement, acknowledgement, abandoned, agreement, question, appreciation, and other. The step of producing an enriched translation of the source speech signal uses a dialog act specific translation model containing a phrase translation table.

Abstract: A phone system can include a phone terminal that includes a biometric data input device. Methods of using the phone terminal can include receiving biometric data of a user at the phone terminal and comparing the biometric data to saved biometric data. A comparison of the received and saved biometric data can be performed to locate one or more configuration files for a user, to authenticate or otherwise confirm the identity of a party, perform another activity, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the biometric data, other data, or a combination thereof can be used to access one or more configuration files that can be used to configure a phone terminal or a data processing system outside of the phone terminal. In another embodiment, the identity of a calling party, a called party, one or more other parties, or any combination thereof can be authenticated or otherwise confirmed.

Abstract: A system to generate a response to a text-based natural language message includes a user interface, processing device, and a computer-readable storage medium storing executable instructions to generate the response to the text-based natural language message. The instructions and a method for generating the response include identifying a sentence in the text-based natural language message, identifying an input clause in the sentence, and parsing the input clause, thereby defining a relationship between words in the input clause. The instructions and method also include assigning a semantic tag to the parsed input clause, comparing the input clause to a previously received clause, the previously received clause being correlated with a previously generated response clause, and generating an output response message derived from the previously generated response clause.

The method includes receiving speech utterances, assigning a pronunciation weight to each unit of speech in the speech utterances, each respective pronunciation weight being normalized at a unit of speech level to sum to 1, for each received speech utterance, optimizing the pronunciation weight by identifying word and phone alignments and corresponding likelihood scores, and discriminatively adapting the pronunciation weight to minimize classification errors, and recognizing additional received speech utterances using the optimized pronunciation weights. A unit of speech can be a sentence, a word, a context-dependent phone, a context-independent phone, or a syllable. The method can further include discriminatively adapting pronunciation weights based on an objective function. The objective function can be maximum mutual information, maximum likelihood training, minimum classification error training, or other functions known to those of skill in the art.

Abstract: A method for handling multiple call redirections in a voice messaging platform is provided that includes receiving a call at the voice messaging platform, wherein multiple, sequential redirecting numbers are associated with the call. The method also includes selecting a mailbox associated with a last number associated with the call when it is determined that the last number does not belong to a closed user group, and depositing a message in the selected mailbox. When the last number belongs to the closed user group, and if the closed user group does not allow individual call forwarding control, the method selects the mailbox based on a closed user group preference.
