  • Patent number: 6413414
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to separate a light lube stock product and a heavy lube stock product from heavy dewaxed lube oils are described which maintain product specifications while utilizing conventional refinery equipment. The heavy dewaxed lube oil stream is first heated, such as in a spiral heat exchanger in the top of a vacuum stripper, with the heavy lube stock fraction, and/or with hot oil. Next, the heated heavy dewaxed lube oil stream is injected into the vacuum stripper, and fuel gas is injected at the bottom of the stripper as the stripping medium. A light lube stock fraction is removed from the upper portion of the stripper, and a heavy lube stock fraction is removed from the lower portion thereof. Optionally, the gas stripping medium is removed from the top of the stripper by a vacuum pump and used to fuel a hot oil exchanger to heat the oil which in turn is employed to heat the heavy dewaxed lube oil stream.

  • Patent number: 6367258
Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing the efficiency of a combined cycle generation plant by assisting the vaporization of cold liquid including liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in a combined cycle power plant. Cold liquid vaporization is assisted by circulating a warm heat transfer fluid to transfer heat to a LNG/LPG vaporizer. The heat transfer fluid is chilled by LNG/LPG cold liquid vaporization and warmed by heat from a gas turbine. The heat transfer fluid absorbs heat from the air intake of a gas turbine and from a secondary heat transfer fluid circulating in a combined cycle power plant. Chilling the gas turbine air intake densifies the air and increases the gas turbine output. Chilling the steam condenser cooling water increases steam turbine output. The effects of chill recovery is higher output and better efficiency of the combined cycle plant.

  • Patent number: 6355088
Abstract: A method of upgrading relatively rich, fine-grained earthy hematite iron ores is provided. The iron ore, after suitable preparation, is reduced using a solid state reduction technique. As a result of the reduction process, the iron grains undergo size enhancement while the nonmetallic oxides are unreduced and remain as refractory oxide gangue. After completion of the reduction process, the enlarged malleable metallic iron grains are crushed in such a way as to cause the iron grains to fuse together, forming large, flat iron flakes. In order to achieve maximum flake size, the crushing system applies a relatively gradual pressing force rather than a rapid, impact type of force. As the large flakes are formed, the iron grains are liberated from the refractory oxide grains resulting in an increase in density. The crushing system causes non-iron oxide bonds to be broken, resulting in the formation of residual refractory particles generally with a grain size of less than 0.05 millimeters.

  • Patent number: 6273265
Abstract: The performance of a gravity separator is enhanced by providing a magnetic material on the separation surface of the gravity separator. A magnetically enhanced gravity concentration/separation apparatus is provided for enhancing separation of a target feed material from remaining feed materials in a feed mixture having a transport medium and feed materials which comprise the target feed material and the remaining feed materials. The target feed material is magnetic and generally has a higher specific gravity than any magnetic feed materials contained in the remaining feed materials. The separating apparatus comprises a gravity separator including a separation surface on which to flow the feed mixture.

  • Patent number: 6260464
Abstract: A structure for the destruction of dangerous materials is described which has a destruction location, which may be a pit below ground level. The destruction pit contains the dangerous materials. At least one durable, sealed membrane is present beneath at least a portion of the destruction pit. An overburden mound of soil is provided above the destruction pit; and at least one shaped explosive charge placed adjacent the dangerous materials capable of subjecting the dangerous materials to crushing detonation forces and high heat for a period of time. After detonation of the explosive charge to destroy the dangerous materials and their containers, such as by pyrolysis, the destruction pit is remediated by removal of the waste products.

  • Patent number: 6228225
Abstract: A semi automatic coke drum deheader device for use on a coke drum wherein the coke drum includes an upper opening, a flange surrounding the upper opening and a first vessel cover releasably attached to the flange. The deheader device comprises a frame attached to the coke drum, a bridge for supporting the first vessel cover and a second vessel cover, a central shaft having a distal end connected to the bridge and a thrust collar surrounding the shaft below the distal end. A lift assembly is attached to the frame for engaging the thrust collar to selectively raise and lower the bridge relative to the flange, and a rotational assembly is operatively connected to the central shaft for rotating the bridge to selectively align the first vessel cover or the second vessel cover above the flange during the delayed coking process.

  • Patent number: 5851689
Abstract: A fuel cell assembly (2) includes a vessel (4) containing a gas-permeable, porous housing (16). A fuel cell stack (14), including cells (42) and interconnect plates (44), is contained within the porous housing. Each interconnect plate has oxidant and fuel sides (64, 60) adjacent to the cathode (58) and anode (62) of adjacent cells. Fuel (68) is supplied to the fuel side at positions (78) midway between the center (82) and the periphery (80) of the fuel side. Reaction products (90) are withdrawn from the center of the fuel side. Flue gas (100) is withdrawn from the center (98) of the oxidant side. Air is preheated as it passes through the porous housing to the fuel cell stack. The preheated air combusts residual fuel (110) flowing radially outwardly from the periphery of the stack to further heat the air to the stack operating temperature to eliminate any external preheating of the air.
