  • Patent number: 6744860
Abstract: Hands free voice dialing telephony devices that can perform relatively simple speech recognition, e.g., to recognize one or a few words corresponding to a command to initiate voice dialing, are described. Speech recognition models stored in the telephony devices can be relatively small and may be either of a speaker dependent or speaker independent type. In response to detecting a command to perform a voice dialing operation the telephony device establishes a connection with a voice dialing intelligent peripheral (IP). The IP includes far greater speech recognition capabilities than the individual telephone devices and is responsible for supporting voice dialing operations associated with a plurality of voice dialing service subscribers. The IP performs speech recognition on speech provided by individual telephony devices and outputs telephone numbers corresponding to recognized spoken names.

  • Patent number: 6424636
Abstract: A public switched telephone network (PSTN) provides communication of digital data from a data provider or LAN to one or more of a plurality of subscriber premises. Asymmetrical digital subscriber line interface units operating at variable rates and in variable modes (ADSL/AVRs) over a local loop offer one-way video-on-demand and other services and carry the necessary signalling between the subscribers and information providers. In an asymmetric mode, the interface units frequency multiplex digital information with voice information to the subscriber and support transmission of a reverse control channel from the subscriber to the central office for transmission back to the information provider. Other modes are supported which permit selective bi-directional and reversible communications as well.

  • Patent number: 6411681
Abstract: A monitoring system captures and processes messages from SS7 links, to compile call detail records (CDRs) for all interoffice call attempts. The CDRs are uploaded into a relational database. A data preparation operation utilizes external information to enhance the records for further processing, for example, to translate release cause codes in the records to textual indications of reasons for the releases. The enhanced records are loaded into a multi-dimensional database. The multi-dimensional database software facilitates analysis of the records to identify a variety of network traffic patterns and related troubles. In particular, the processing of the enhanced CDR data can provide a variety of analytical tools and reports, using the release cause codes. For example, the analysis can indicate the number of calls to a destination that did not get through and identify by major categories the principle reasons that calls did not go through, e.g. user busy, no trunk available, etc.

  • Patent number: 6400707
Abstract: A system and method for conducting a voice communication through a hybrid network which includes a packet internetwork, such as the Internet, connected to a circuit switched telephone network. The packet internetwork is connected to the switched telephone network through a static filter device, a packet switch, and a telephone network controlled gateway. A control processor is connected to the packet switch and to the filter device. The filter device generates a real time copy of call set up signaling dialog between the party requesting connection and the gateway which passes through or to the filter device. This duplicate of set up signaling is delivered from the filter device through the packet switch to the control processor. The control processor generates therefrom a filter device control signal which specifies the filter parameters derived from the set-up signaling dialog.

  • Patent number: 6377562
Abstract: A wireless, cellular radio link is provided from a base station to a plurality of subscriber stations within a cell reception area. Information data, which may be of textual, video or other format, are communicated asymmetrically as high bandwidth transmissions in the downstream direction to the users while low upstream bandwidth is provided to permit users to request the data or to provide return radio link condition information. Buffers associated with respective subscribers collect requested data from information providers for transmission by the base station in a statistical time division multiplexed (STDM) fashion, whereby each subscriber may be assigned a minimum transmission time interval during which data will be transferred from the associated buffer. Controlled logical token passing governs a variable token interval during which data transmission for each buffer is permitted in turn.

  • Patent number: 6351453
Abstract: Specialized telecom network users who burden the network, such as Internet Service Providers (ISPs), are identified by analysis of network traffic data to identify addresses (e.g. telephone numbers) for destinations receiving unique patterns of incoming traffic. For an ISP, in particular, the analysis involves identifying telephone, numbers of destinations receiving a high volume of calls and having connections exhibiting a long average hold time. To further enhance the ISP finder analysis, the call data may be examined to confirm that there is no outgoing call traffic from any station associated with the candidate ISP numbers. When numbers are identified by the call data analysis, a technician can call each number and listen for a modem tone, as a confirmation that each candidate number actually is of a data service, such as an ISP. Similar methodologies can identify destination numbers for other unique service providers, such as credit card verification services.

  • Patent number: 6330308
Abstract: A voice mail system today offers a user the option to forward a message that he or she has reviewed, alone or along with a message recorded by the user. However, to forward the message, the voice mail system needs to receive the telephone number of the party intended as the recipient of the forwarded message. To eliminate the need for manual output of the destination telephone number, the voice mail system is coupled for communication with a voice responsive directory service system. The directory service system or alternatively the voice mail system prompts the user to speak the name of the party intended as the recipient of the forwarded message. The directory service system analyzes the input speech information, identifies a desired destination and retrieves the number for that destination. The directory service system may announce the number to the user, for manual input to the voice mail system. Preferably, the directory service system supplies the number directly to the voice mail system.

  • Patent number: 6317493
Abstract: A signal band width limiter is provided in a telecommunication path that includes a leased unbundled subscriber line. The limiter may be a programmable active filter such as a digital signal processor in which filter characteristics are set under control of a controller at a central office. The controller may acquire the necessary subscriber level information via a data network from a data base at a remote location. Band pass ranges are set to frequencies corresponding to subscribed services. As the subscribed service is changed, replacement by the appropriate passband filter readily can be made. The telecommunication path can be monitored to determine whether an upgrade of service is required. Parameters of subscriber line leased from an ILEC by a CLEC can be tested at the ILEC premises.

  • Publication number: 20010028706
Abstract: In a public switched telephone network, real time monitors on SS7 links will collect interoffice signaling messages. A site processor compiles data from the signaling messages relating to individual calls, to form call detail records (CDRs) for all interoffice call attempts. The site servers upload the CDRs to a central server. Automatic Message Accounting (AMA) records also are accumulated for at least selected central office switching systems and uploaded to a server. Programs running on the servers enable network operations personal to analyze a variety of network traffic patterns, for example to study the number of calls to particular numbers during various times periods and the hold time of the calls in order to identify the numbers of Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

  • Patent number: 6298123
Abstract: Local exchange carriers (LECs) face increasingly stiff competition. The LECs provide interconnect services for many of the potentially competing carriers. To forecast business trends and manage its network, any carrier, particularly a LEC, needs to effectively estimate the size and revenue generating potentials of the business of the potentially competing carriers. In accord with the invention, monitor equipment on the one carrier's network forms detailed records from call related messages produced by that network for interconnect call traffic with another carrier's network. These records are loaded into a relational database. Preferably, a data preparation routine enhances the data, for example, by translating certain codes into text and by spreading usage data over predefined time intervals. An on-line analytical processing program runs one or more applications to analyze the interconnect traffic.

  • Patent number: 6292479
Abstract: A voice call is transported through diverse network paths including a switched telephone network and a wide area data internetwork, for example, the Internet. In routing the call, common channel signalling is used to provide data identifying a calling subscriber line from a calling PSTN, which information can then be transported through the separate data internetwork to the destination PSTN, at which the data is then extracted and sent to the called subscriber line while completing routing of the call. A route for the call is established at gateways connected to the data internetwork at the interface points with the calling and destination PSTNs, calling subscriber line information and dialed digit information being conveyed to the gateways. The destination end gateway initiates a call connection to the calling subscriber line via the destination PSTN to complete routing of the call, while supplying identification of the calling subscriber line in a form recognized as such by the called PSTN.
