    Abstract: Both positive pressure fluid and negative pressure fluid are used in a method and by an apparatus to at least partially separate a sheet prior to the feeding of the sheet. A carriage 22 having registration arms 160 resiliently coupled thereto is rotated toward a sheet lying in a storage position in a hopper 200. The carriage 22 bears both a positive pressure-communicating port 54 and negative pressure-communicating orifice, preferably in the form of two bellows-type sucker cups 56A, 56B. Positive pressure fluid is applied through port 54 in a manner whereby at least a portion of sheet 220 is attracted to a surface 52 in which ports 54 lie. While positive pressure fluid is being applied, the carriage 22 is rotated away from the storage position of the sheet 220, thereby deflecting at least a portion of the sheet about a first axis 208 of the sheet 220.

    Abstract: An insertion machine has a stationary table for holding inserts, and a linearly movable table for receiving and holding envelopes. The moving table jogs left or right to align the insert and envelope so that the insert may be pushed into the envelope. A parallelogram drive mechanism has a first pair of belt drives which form vertical parallel arms. As the table moves back and forth, the length of the parallel vertical drive mechanism does not change appreciably so that the ends of the vertical arms float up and down. There is no need for sliding gears, shafts, or the like to transfer power to the table. A second pair of belts drive the vertical belts from a stationary point at a center of the side of the parallelogram which is opposite the table. The second pair of drive belts enables the lower ends of the first pair of drive belts to float up or down slightly without causing any dislocation as a result of table movement.

    Abstract: A bimodal electrophotographic apparatus and process which incorporates capabilities for making both positive and reversal copies. One surface of a layer of a zinc oxide coated paper, or the like, is given an initial electrostatic charge. The charged surface is then exposed to an image having light and dark areas for causing surface charge to dissipate, in varying degree depending on the amount of light striking the charged paper, in the exposure areas. A charged toner is applied to the zinc-oxide-coated paper by a magnetic brush. In the reversal mode, the brush has a bias potential. The brush is formed by an aggregation of magnetic toner particles clinging to the outside of a cylindrical sleeve while magnets inside the sleeve rotate. The toner collects on the paper to form an image depending upon where the charge is dissipated.
