    Abstract: An air flow regulator includes a damper (14) and an air cylinder (20) operatively connected with the damper (14) to adjust a damper setting. A pressure sensor (52) indicates a pneumatic pressure in the air cylinder (20). An air pressure regulator (42) is operatively connected with the air cylinder (20) to pressurize and exhaust the air cylinder (20) responsive to an electrical input (70). The air pressure regulator (42) includes a calibration table (64) associating steady state air cylinder pressure values with regulator shut-off pressure values. Responsive to the electrical input (70) updating a steady-state air cylinder pressure value, the air pressure regulator (42) pressurizes or exhausts the air cylinder (20) until the pressure sensor (52) indicates a pressure corresponding to a regulator shut-off pressure value associated in the calibration table (64) with the updated steady-state air cylinder pressure value, whereupon the air pressure regulator (42) ceases the pressurizing or exhausting.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a pressure regulator for propane and liquefied petroleum with a balanced valve. An inlet port (10) receives supply pressure and an outlet port (14) receives output pressure. A threaded shaft (28) engages a pocket in a spring button (20). A diaphragm assembly (22) engages the bottom of a range spring (24). A T-handle (26) is rotated to move the spring button (20) downward, compressing the range spring (24) which creates a net downward force on the diaphragm assembly (22). A valve mechanism (12) includes a supply seat (30), a supply valve (34), a balance piston (32), and a pintle interconnection (36). The supply valve (34) moves off of the supply seat (30) as the downward force is exerted on the diaphragm assembly (22), and supply pressure fills the outlet port (14).

    Abstract: An electric coil (20) induces a magnetic flux through a magnetic flow path (22, 24) which terminates in pole faces (26, 28) disposed parallel to a gap (30) therebetween. A non-ferrous pivot element (36) is mounted to one of the pole faces adjacent an edge thereof most distant from the gap. An armature (40) which is at least partially ferromagnetic is held in firm frictional engagement with the pivot element by a taut band (42). The armature pivots about the pivot element in accordance with current flowing through the coil. A fluid nozzle (54) is mounted adjacent the armature such that fluid flow through the nozzle is throttled in accordance with pivotal movement of the armature, hence, the electrical control signal current in the coil.

    Abstract: A switching valve for delivering fluids from different inlets to a pumping outlet utilizes a pressure responsive spool movable due to a pressure differential in the inlets to one position wherein one of the inlets feeds the outlet and a second position wherein the other of the inlets feeds the outlet. The spool carries a pair of umbrella valves for effectively controlling the flow of fluid to the outlets as well as a pair of biasing springs acting on each side of a piston diaphragm which has limited travel on the spool. An adjustable detent arrangement is provided on the end of the spool to keep the spool travel balanced and cooperates with the springs to furnish a snap acting valve.

    Abstract: A vacuum controller for maintaining a defined vacuum pressure to a remote location, including a housing which defines a cavity. The controller includes means for connecting the cavity to the remote location, to a high vacuum, and to a control signal pressure. There is a cup-shaped plunger, having an opening in its side wall, which is adapted to reciprocate in the cavity, and there is a flexible diaphragm which seals between the housing and the plunger. The diaphragm also operates as a valving mechanism, such that, when the plunger moves in one direction, the diaphragm closes off the opening in the side wall of the plunger, and when the plunger moves in the other direction, it opens the opening. There is a check valve in said controller to prevent inversion of the diaphragms.

    Abstract: A force balance instrument providing precision control of pneumatic actuators in response to command pressure signals independent of external forces on the actuator shaft. The instrument includes a high gain signal detection circuit in combination with one or two pilot operated output valves. In the case of two output valves inverse "push-pull" control of a double acting pneumatic actuator is provided. Full supply pressure differential can be developed across the piston of the actuator, permitting to minimize the size of the actuator for any specified output force.The positioner proper controls the position of valve actuator system through a stem connector arm and a feed-back spring. A force balance condition is initially established between the feedback spring and the force of a rolling diaphragm controlled piston assembly for the range of signal pressure P.sub.1 to be used. The rolling diaphragm includes an elastomeric ply and a fabric reinforcement of the ply.

    Abstract: A shaft sealing precluding fluid from moving in a direction longitudinally of the shaft. The sealing means is a rolling diaphragm including a clamping flange on one end of the rolling wall thereof. There is a difference of pressure to either side of the rolling wall of the diaphragm. Its shaft has a predetermined outer diameter, and its radially inward directed bottom has a central bore therein equal to the predetermined outer diameter of the shaft. A tubular member having an inner diameter equal to the outer diameter of the shaft is mounted on the shaft. That tubular member has an outer diameter of such thickness as to engage a length of the rolling wall of the rolling diaphragm.

    Abstract: A self-aligning seal for minimizing, or entirely suppressing, the flow of a fluid in a direction generally longitudinally of a shaft subjected to axial motions and to tilting motions in any direction. The seal comprises a shaft, a bushing surrounding said shaft, a convoluted diaphragm having radially inner support means affixed to said bushing and radially outer support means affixed to a fixed structure. The bushing has abutment means limiting the relative movement of bushing and shaft. The bushing has preferably externally the shape of a frustum of a cone which facilitates connecting the radially inner end of the convoluted diaphragm to the bushing. The bushing may also be provided with elastomeric sealing means such as an "O" ring precluding the flow of fluid through the narrow gap formed between the shaft and the shaft-receiving bore of the bushing.

    Abstract: A pneumatic relay, and more particularly a pneumatic reversing relay, wherein the output decreases with increasing signal pressure. The relay is of the rolling diaphragm type, each rolling diaphragm including a radially outer clamping flange, a radially inner clamping flange and an intermediate rolling wall. Means are provided for securing clamping flanges of the rolling diaphragms against pull-out, creep and relaxation of clamping forces. The valve has a freely floating valve stem having a high degree of pneumatic stability combined with low stem friction. The freely floating operation is obtained by means of an "O" ring surrounding the valve stem and a baffle plate deforming the "O" ring. The relay includes a bias spring whose bias is controlled by the deformation of a metal bonnet housing the bias spring. Spring retainer caps transmit the deformation of the bias spring in a precise and stable manner.

    Abstract: A rolling diaphragm not subject to the formation of cusps. The rolling wall of the diaphragm is made up of two regions, one region intended to engage the lateral wall of the piston of the rolling diaphragm device, and another region intended to extend from the lateral wall of the piston of the rolling diaphragm device to the diaphragm clamping region formed by the cylinder body of the rolling diaphragm device. In the first mentioned region the rate of change of diameter along the rolling wall is relatively small, or minimized. The second region is circularly shaped in cross-section. The radius of curvature of the cross-section of that portion is relatively large, so that the rate of change of diameter of the rolling wall in that portion thereof is relatively large.
