Tendency toward high frequency vibration and thus noise experienced in high speed operation is inhibited by ventilation in the tangency angles between the bars and the running strips.

    Abstract: An injection molding machine having a barrel and a reciprocating and rotatable screw disposed therein. A combination heat transfer and stratification device is disposed between the screw and the outlet of the barrel. The device includes a generally tubular portion having radially outwardly extending ribs. The ribs are in contact with the inner wall of the barrel. Heating means supply heat to the portion of the barrel containing the device and heat is transmitted through the rib portions. A process is disclosed whereby plastic is partially melted in the screw section and then stratified for final melting and thereby reduces mixing to provide a mottled appearance or plastic parts containing long fine filaments such as fine wires.

    Abstract: This apparatus utilizes a traveling looped conveyor belt upon which a plurality of previously slit web ribbons are received. The conveyor belt is then movably positioned to partially wrap a spool to simultaneously urge each of the ribbons into wrapping engagement with the rotating spool to be wound into a roll thereon. The traveling conveyor belt is selectively positionable about the spool and drive drum to permit removal of the wound roll and the positioning of a new spool so that transfer of the plurality of ribbons can be made from the wound roll to the next spool quickly and automatically at normal operating machine speed.

The flocs or bundles are exposed to an oscillating electrostatic field, the resultant mechanical agitation shakes individual fibers loose, which then fall through a screening wire onto a moving forming wire. At a station downstream from the forming section a binder is applied. After appropriate conditioning, the newly formed web is picked off for further processing.

    Abstract: A screw for use in the bore of an extruder barrel of a molding machine thermo-plastics material feeder has an intermediate section of circumferentially interrupted helical flights or screw threads with inclined ramps on the leading ends of the interrupted flights or threads effective to flatten unmelted lumps of plastics material for increasing the surface area thereof to enhance heat transfer for expediting melting of the material. The tapered ramps are preferably longitudinally grooved forming shallow pockets gripping the plastics material and shearing the lumps as they are wedged between the ramps and bore of the extruder barrel. The peripheries of the flights or screw threads are spaced from the bore of the extruder barrel to define extrusion gaps therebetween with the gaps diminishing in thickness from the inlet to the outlet ends of the screw section or zone.

    Abstract: A fibrous web is continuously formed between inner and outer endless foraminous forming belts between which stock slurry is fed from a headbox, the belts being held in tension as they wrap a first convexly curved forming run surface from which the outer belt is separated immediately following the forming run, the inner belt carrying the wet web then running over a second convexly curved surface from the offrunning side of which the inner belt is then separated and a porous pickoff belt is pressed by a substantial convex area of an imperforate pickup roll against the wet web on the inner belt, the inner belt being guided to diverge from the pickoff belt commencing at the off-running end of the convex area of contact of the pickup roll and the wet web being forced to adhere to the pickoff belt by the vacuum action of the imperforate surface of the pickup roll. By multiplication of the apparatus a multiply web can be formed.

    Abstract: Multi-ply web forming stock jets directed through a slice from a single headbox into a forming zone between converging forming surfaces in a papermaking machine are maintained separated for a sufficient interval after leaving the slice opening to permit drainage and partial ply formation of the stock delivered by one of the stock jets to one of the forming surfaces before the stock in a second of the stock jets joins in fiber felting laminar relation with the contiguous surface of the partially formed ply. Flexible divider sheet members divide the slice chamber of a headbox into separate flow passages aligned respectively with different ones of headbox subchambers to receive streams of the stock from the respective subchambers and maintain the streams separated, and the flexible members extend a substantial distance out of the slice opening in the direction of flow of the stock jets to maintain stock jets separated for a sufficient interval after leaving the slice opening.

    Abstract: A web spreading and guiding device to maintain a running paper sheet making foraminous web comprising a wire or pick-up felt transversely taut and straight running in a papermaking machine, has a pair of free running pneumatic tires having their treads in nipping relation to one another to engage a margin of the web in the nip, the tires being carried by an arm which is pivotally biased to effect transverse web stretching bias of the tires on the web margin running through the nip. Generally one of the devices will be mounted to act on one margin of the web and another of the devices on the opposite margin of the web and the devices being cooperatively biased to stretch the web in opposite directions. Means are provided to control the tire bias for correcting any deviations of the web from a straight running path.
