  • Patent number: 5522731
Abstract: Proposed is a connector assembly for electrically coupling a shielded cable to a ground plane. The assembly includes a metal shroud with pins for press-fitting to the ground plane, and a plug with a shield connection clamped or taped to the cable shield. Ground connections are provided by two paths: one from the drain wire of the cable through a signal contact in the plug and the other through the shield connection and shroud. Spacers in the shroud provide a keying function while permitting end-to-end stacking of plugs. Latching features on the plug and shroud hold the plugs in position and prevent insertion of the plug in the wrong orientation. Heat stakes in the plug can be used for the latching feature.

  • Patent number: 5516304
Abstract: An electrical connector comprises a housing having latch members at both ends of the housing and a pair of metal fasteners capable of clamping on the latch members. The housing has a longitudinal groove for receiving a daughter board. The metal fastener includes a fixing section and a spring section which substantially extends uprightly therefrom. The fixing section clamps on the housing. The spring section is provided with a restriction leg and a slot which are formed by punching, and the restriction leg is substantially vertical to the surface of the spring section. When the metal fastener clamps on the housing, a rib provided at the end portion of the latch member fits the slot of the spring section so as to prevent the side shifting of the metal fastener.

  • Patent number: 5511984
Abstract: An electrical connector assembly according to the current invention comprises a receptacle and a right angle header for connecting two or more printed circuit boards. A composite action beam is located in the receptacle and has a movable end and a fixed end. During an initial phase of the pin insertion cycle, the movable end of the composite action beam deflects so as to minimize the force necessary to insert the pin into the connector housing. During an intermediate phase of the insertion cycle, the movable end contacts an inside wall of the connector and the composite action beam functions as a two-end supported beam. The composite action beam supported at both ends exerts sufficiently high normal force against the inserted pin so as to retain the pin in the inserted position. Thus, the composite action beam reduces insertion force without compromising normal retention force once the pin is inserted.

  • Patent number: 5504989
Abstract: Disclosed is a multi-row right angle connector and a press block for installing the connector on a mounting substrate without soldering the contact pins. The connector legs comprise "eye of the needle" compliant interfaces that make electrical contact with the interior surfaces of the substrate's plated through holes. The press block is designed for use with a four-row right angle receptacle and locates rows 2, 3, and 4 on respective true grid positions and serves as a means for transmitting force from an external press to the contact pin tails. The contact tails in rows 2, 3, and 4 have a T-shaped shoulder that is pressed into a pocket in the press block. The insertion force is applied to the pins in row 1 by a corner having a radius matching the radius of the row 1 tails.

Abstract: An electrical contact pin is disclosed for mounting in a through hole in a printed circuit board. The contact pin has a pointed part and a longitudinal contact part which interacts with the hole when mounted therein. The cross-section of the contact part is generally H-shaped formed of four fins which project parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pin and are connected over the longitudinal distance of the contact part by a central cross rib and define two longitudinal recesses situated on either side of the cross rib. Each longitudinal recess has an essentially V-shaped floor. The contact part is made slightly curved at its short sides, each of which comprises two fins merging into each other over the entire longitudinal distance. The fins are also curved more inwardly by their fin ends starting from the pointed part over an appreciable part of the longitudinal distance. • Patent number: 5453017
Abstract: An improved connector for an electronic module or the like includes a housing having a socket opening that is sized and configured to accept an electronic module, and a plurality of terminals mounted to the housing. Each of the terminals has a foot portion having a layer of non-solderable material coated on one side of the foot portion to prevent solder from adhering to that side. A capillary nest is formed by a channel surface on the underside of the foot portion when the terminal is mounted on a conductor pad such that solder flows through the capillary nest under the influence of capillary forces from the side of the terminal having a non-solderable coating thereon to the other side for forming a solder joint on that other side. A ring of non-solderable material is coated around a middle portion of the terminal to prevent solder from flowing to the electrical contact surfaces located above the ring.

  • Patent number: 5451168
Abstract: A connector apparatus for a memory card comprises a one-piece integrated metallic frame having a cross member and a pair of guide rails integrally extending from the cross member. Mounting means in the form of narrow slots are integrally formed on at least one guide rail to allow the push rod of an ejector mechanism to be mounted on the guide rail. Alternatively, the mounting means may be symmetrically formed on both guide rails to allow selective mounting of the push rod on either guide rail. Various other components of the ejector mechanism are mounted to the one-piece frame via respective tab and slot mechanisms to reduce the need for additional mounting hardware. Other functional components of the connector apparatus are integrally formed on the one-piece frame, including static discharge contacts, spring contacts for memory card grounding points, and mounting provisions for mounting the connector to a printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 5445529
Abstract: A board-to-board interconnect connector apparatus is provided which substantially improves electrical connection even when some positional displacement occurs between a receptacle housing and a header housing. The connector apparatus includes the receptacle housing mountable on a mother board and the header housing mountable on a daughter board. Receptacle contact terminals are arranged in a parallel array in the receptacle housing, and header contacts terminals are arranged in another parallel array in the header housing. The surface of the contact terminal is angled relative to the direction of a pitch of the contact terminals. Thus, when some positional displacement of the receptacle housings occurs in the pitch array direction of the contact terminals, the receptacle contact terminals are kept in contact with the header contact terminals.
