    Abstract: A spray nozzle has a nozzle portion at an outlet or downstream end that includes a nozzle body defining an opening therethrough, and a movable stem or pintle at least partially within the opening of the nozzle body. The stem and nozzle body define a gap therebetween to define a fluid passageway for fluid in the nozzle to flow through the nozzle portion and out of the nozzle throughout a range of relative movement between the stem and the nozzle body. The relative movement and the size of the gap may be controllable independently of fluid pressure of fluid within the nozzle. The nozzle body and the stem may define geometries so that the flow area between the stem and the nozzle body does not increase, and may decrease, in the downstream direction. The axis of the spray may be at an angle to the nozzle.

Some embodiments include a second deflector. In some embodiments, each finger and slot has a configuration that defines, at least in part, a flow trajectory, and the flow trajectory defined, at least in part, by one finger or slot is different from the flow trajectory defined by another finger or slot.

    Abstract: A nozzle for discharging first and second fluids in a spray pattern into a vessel, such as oil and steam in a catalytic cracking unit, includes various configurations for preventing erosion of the outlet portion of the nozzle that otherwise might be due, for example, to contact with a catalyst or other predetermined substance. In one such nozzle, the exterior surface of the outlet portion substantially conforms to the internal contour of the vessel. In another such nozzle, the outlet portion defines a plurality of substantially concentric, substantially elliptical-shaped outlet apertures. In another nozzle, the outlet portion is formed of ceramic and is connected to the inlet portion by a metal connector.

    Abstract: A spray nozzle for discharging at least one fluid in a spray pattern into a fluid stream in a vessel, such as an atomized mixture of oil and steam in a fluidic catalytic cracking unit, wherein the nozzle alters the flow patterns of the fluid stream in the vicinity of the nozzle to inhibit erosion of the nozzle and maintain the spray pattern. The nozzle comprises an inlet member defining at least one inlet conduit and an outlet member in fluid communication with the inlet member. The outlet member includes an exterior surface and a plurality of bosses angularly spaced relative to each other about an axis of the outlet, each boss defining an outlet aperture in fluid communication with the at least one inlet conduit having a length (L) and a diameter (D) and an axially extending wall, wherein the axially extending wall extends outwardly a length (X) greater than about ? inch relative to the exterior surface and L/D is at least about ½.

    Abstract: A spray nozzle includes a body defining an inlet chamber and an outlet. An orifice disk, adjacent the outlet, has opposing surfaces, an inner sidewall extending between the opposing surfaces which defines an orifice, and a peripheral sidewall extending between the opposing surfaces for centering the orifice disk within the inlet chamber. A swirl disk, adjacent to the orifice disk, has opposing surfaces and a sidewall extending between the opposing surfaces. The sidewall of the swirl disk forms a periphery for centering the swirl disk, a hollow for creating a vortex adjacent to the orifice and an inlet for channeling fluid from the periphery to the hollow. A plug is fixed within the inlet chamber of the body for retaining the orifice and swirl disks as well as defining an annulus area in fluid communication with the inlet of the swirl disk.

    Abstract: In a spray nozzle, a carrier defines a spray aperture, a groove surrounding the spray aperture for receiving an o-ring, a first locating bore for slidably receiving an orifice plate seated against the o-ring and for aligning the orifice plate with the spray aperture, and a second locating bore for slidably receiving a swirl unit and aligning the swirl unit with the orifice plate and spray aperture. A pair of retaining lugs project inwardly from the carrier a predetermined distance for engaging the upstream end of the swirl unit to thereby retain the swirl unit and orifice plate within the carrier. The swirl unit defines on its peripheral surface a recessed flat which is aligned with the retaining lugs to thereby clear the lugs upon inserting the swirl unit into the carrier. An elongated slot is formed on the upstream end of the swirl unit for receiving a screw driver.

    Abstract: A nozzle for atomizing a liquid with a gas, such as an oil/steam or air/water mixture, injects the mixture through a plurality of orifices circumferentially spaced about the longitudinal axis of the nozzle, wherein each orifice defines an axis directed toward a respective portion of a linear target for creating a flat fan spray of substantially uniform fluid distribution. A mixing vane is mounted upstream of the orifices within the nozzle for creating a swirling or vortical flow within a mixing chamber to thoroughly mix the fluids prior to passage through the orifices. The mixing vane is in the form of a pair of transversely-extending, approximately sinusoidal vanes for creating the vortical flow and defining a central aperture for creating an axial flow within the vortical flow. The two-phase mixture is supplied to the mixing vane in a common inlet conduit.

    Abstract: An improved spray head for a nozzle for atomizing a liquid with a gas has an open inner end to receive the gas and liquid, a cylindrical medial portion defining a mixing chamber for creating a liquid-gas mixture, and an outer end wall that has a plurality of orifices arranged in a spaced circular orientation about the longitudinal axis of the mixing chamber. Each orifice defines a flow axis which is directed toward a linear target located a predetermined distance from the spray head for atomizing and directing a respective portion of the liquid-gas mixture onto the linear target in an approximately planar, flat fan spray pattern. A liquid atomizer is coupled in fluid communication between an inlet conduit for the liquid and the mixing chamber for atomizing the liquid discharged into the mixing chamber and creating the liquid-gas mixture.

    Abstract: Atomizing spray nozzle for mixing and atomizing various liquid and gas combinations includes a central liquid conduit, an annular gas passage disposed concentrically about the liquid conduit, a helical spray member and a spray head. The spray member includes a bore disposed in axial alignment with the liquid conduit and is of helical configuration which, in cross-section, tapers inwardly toward the distal end thereof. The spray head is of generally tubular configuration and encloses the helical member, except for at least one outlet orifice through its outer end wall. The spray head provides a chamber for the mixing of the gas and liquid and for the discharge of the resulting mixture through the orifice of the head to form an atomized spray.

    Abstract: A nozzle is pressure activated to generate a fine droplet, conical spray. The nozzle has an outer tubular body with a fluid inlet opening at one end and a discharge opening at its opposite end. Coaxially disposed within the body is a conduit for carrying fluid from the inlet to the discharge opening. Adjacent the inlet end of the nozzle, the conduit includes an annular flange with fluid seal between the peripheral edge of the flange and the inner wall of the nozzle body. The conduit is axially movable within the tubular body over a predetermined distance. Adjacent the discharge end of the nozzle is a helical opening through the wall of the conduit. The helical opening is spaced for the discharge end of the conduit less than the extent of axial movement of the conduit. A closure plate is disposed at the outer end of the conduit for shutting off flow of fluid through the nozzle.

    Abstract: A gas and liquid mixing nozzle for an abrasive type slurry is characterized by a central liquid passage and a helical vane disposed about the outlet end of the liquid passage to deflect the liquid outwardly into a generally flat spray pattern. The vane portion of the nozzle is preferably a separate insert formed of abrasion resistant material. An annular orifice is coaxially disposed about the outlet end of the liquid passage to eject an air stream into the liquid spray to mix therewith and form an aerated, high velocity spray. At the outer end of the helical vane is a deflector plug having a generally planar inner surface against which the liquid, issuing from the nozzle passage, impinges. The plug has a substantial axial length approximately the same as the axial dimension of the vane portion of the nozzle, and its outer periphery is inwardly and outwardly tapered toward the outer surface of the plug. This contour provides for a spray pattern of uniform droplet size.

    Abstract: A full cone spray nozzle, particularly for liquids bearing fibrous particles and the like, having a pair of swirl imparting vanes within the bore of the nozzle. Transversely of the bore, the vanes are approximately semi-circular segments, each having a central recess to provide an opening for liquid flow in axial alignment with the outlet orifice of the nozzle. The vanes overlap circumferentially on diametrically opposite sides of the opening. In the direction of liquid flow, each semi-circular segment is generally sinusoidal, having a convex loop in one quadrant of the passage facing upstream and a concave loop also facing upstream in an adjacent quadrant of the passage. The curved loop portions of each vane are interconnected by an axially extending leg which cross at about the center of the bore and being recessed define the central opening.
