Publication number: 20150039391Abstract: Methods and systems are presented for predicting demand for battery services in an electric vehicle network. The predicted demand may be used for managing the electric vehicle network, for example, by adjusting battery policies in order to provide improved battery services to users of electric vehicles. The battery policies can be adjusted by increasing or decreasing battery charging rates within the electric vehicle network, and recommending alternative battery service locations to users of vehicles who might otherwise choose a congested battery service location.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2012Publication date: February 5, 2015Applicant: BETTER PLACE GMBHInventors: Barak Hershkovitz, Motty Cohen, Emek Sadot, Yaron Straschnov

Patent number: 8517132Abstract: The electric vehicle includes a battery pack that can be exchanged at a battery exchange station. At the battery exchange station, an at least partially spent battery pack is exchanged for an at least partially charged battery pack. A battery bay is configured to be disposed at an underside of the electric vehicle. The battery bay includes a frame which defines a cavity. The cavity is configured to at least partially receive the battery pack therein. The battery bay comprises at least one latch rotatably pivoted about an axis substantially parallel with a plane formed by the underside of the vehicle. The latch is configured to lift, retain the battery pack at least partially within the cavity.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2011Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Yoav Heichal, Tal Agassi

Patent number: 8454377Abstract: The connection system is designed to facilitate electrical and data connections between the battery and the electric vehicle. The connectors are designed with alignment mechanisms to account for initial misalignment of the battery and vehicle while still ensuring positive contact between them. The alignment mechanisms also introduce compliance into the system to ensure that the mechanical components of the system are not placed under unwanted loads or stresses. The connection system houses data connectors carrying communication signals as well as power connectors carrying high voltage electricity. The data connectors are shielded to prevent interference caused by proximity to the high voltage elements. The connection system uses no mechanical latching or locking mechanisms.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2011Date of Patent: June 4, 2013Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Yoav Heichal, Tal Agassi, Shai Agassi

Publication number: 20120211319Abstract: A cable dispensing system is disclosed which includes multiple parallel coils of flexible non-insulated cables separated by multiple parallel insulating discs. The insulating discs have hubs to which the inner portions of the coils are fixedly coupled. The insulating discs and coils are disposed within a housing, which is rotatably coupled to the multiple parallel insulating discs and fixedly coupled to each outer portion of the multiple coils. The cables comprising the coils are routed from the inner portions through tunnels, which extend through the insulating discs in paths parallel to the axis of the parallel insulating discs. When cords attached to the housing are extended, the coils become wound, creating an electrical short between adjacent loops of the spiral coil. The shorter conductive path reduces the amount of energy that is lost as heat.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2012Publication date: August 23, 2012Applicant: Better Place GmbHInventors: Ori Jacobi, Avner Sadot, Shaul Hanuna

Patent number: 8246376Abstract: The flexible electrical connector is designed to facilitate electrical connections between a power receiving device, such as an at least partially electric vehicle, and a power supplying device, such as an electric vehicle charging station. The flexible electrical connector has a blade shaped housing attached to a power cord that extends to the power supplying device. The blade shaped housing has a substantially rigid end portion with an electrical interface configured to detachably mate with a corresponding electrical interface on the power receiving device. The blade shaped housing also has a handle portion made of a substantially flexible material such which is configured to flex about the rigid end portion along an arc in a single plane. As such, the flexible handle can absorb impacts it receives rather than transferring them to the rigid and breakable electrical interface components.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 2011Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Gad Amit, Inbal Etgar, Chadwick John Harber, Mike Massucco

Patent number: 8164300Abstract: At a battery exchange station a discharged battery is removed and a charged battery is inserted into an electric vehicle. The battery exchange station has various mechanisms to make this exchange. In some embodiments, the batteries are stored in a warehouse, where they are given an appropriate amount of charge. The charged batteries are moved from the warehouse by an automated robotic mechanism. The automated robotic system provides the charged battery to a battery exchange system which inserts the charged battery into the vehicle after it removes the discharged battery from the vehicle. The insertion and removal of the battery is done vertically, i.e., into and out of the bottom of the vehicle. The battery exchange system is located in a service bay under the vehicle. A sliding door system creates an opening above the service bay. The opening is of variable size depending on the size of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2009Date of Patent: April 24, 2012Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Shai Agassi, Yoav Heichal

Patent number: 8035341Abstract: A method and system is provided to deploy electrical charge spots in stages according to demand. During a first stage a plurality of infrastructure adapters are installed. This may involve demolishing and rebuilding portions of the infrastructure and laying down power cables from the electrical power supply to the charge spot locations. The infrastructure adapters are then coupled to an electrical power supply. Many if not all of the infrastructure adapters are covered with a temporary housing protecting them from vandalism and weather. During a second stage, in response to a demand for charge stations, the charge stations are completed. During the second stage, at least one external unit is attached to an infrastructure adapter by making an infrastructure adapter quick connect interface with an external unit quick connect interface. As such, a charge spot is completed quickly in response to demand.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2010Date of Patent: October 11, 2011Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Eran Genzel, Avner Sadot, Shaul Hanuna, Dalit Bahar

The battery is inserted and removed along a vertical axis, i.e., into and out of the bottom of the vehicle. The battery exchange system is located in a service bay under the vehicle. A sliding door system creates an opening above the service bay. A vehicle is received over the sliding door system, such that at least one wheel of the vehicle rests on the conveyor system. The door slides in a first direction while allowing the conveyor system to slide in a direction opposite the first direction. The conveyor system also supports the at least one wheel of the vehicle while the door and conveyor slide in opposite directions. The sliding of the door and the sliding of the conveyor system occur at least partially simultaneously.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2010Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: Better Place GmbHInventors: Shai Agassi, Yoav Heichal
