Abstract: A process for measuring the coating weight of a dried-in-place non-chromate polyacrylamide/surfactant based conversion coating is disclosed. An ammonium hexafluorotitanate tracer added to such a conversion coating was found to not adversely affect coating properties. The tracer was found to remain proportional to the polymer matrix when the coating was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence.
Abstract: A method for determining the concentration of cyanide in an aqueous system is disclosed. The method determines the cyanide concentration from a determination of reference thiocyanate concentrations and will measure the cyanide concentration in the presence of sulfides.
Abstract: A process for the inhibition of corrosion caused by naphthenic acid and sulfur compounds during the elevated temperature processing of crude oil by use of an aryl containing phosphite compound having one of the structures: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 and at least one R group is an aryl radical.
Abstract: A method and composition for controlling deposition of scale and the like in waters having a high calcium ion content is disclosed. The composition comprises a combination of an alkylidene diphosphonic acid and a water soluble polymeric material.
Abstract: A method and composition for reducing and maintaining the coefficient of friction of a metal surface cleaned by an alkaline cleaner, while preventing the formation of foam on said surface, is disclosed. The cleaned metal surface is contacted with a treatment comprising monoethanolamine, an ethoxylated alkyl ether phosphate and a silicate.
Abstract: Methods are provided for inhibiting the corrosion of iron and iron-containing metals in contact with aqueous systems. Salicylaldoxime is added to cooling water systems to inhibit the corrosion of these metal surfaces.
Abstract: A method and compounds for inhibiting the formation of scale is disclosed. The method is particularly effective at inhibiting the formation and deposition of calcium scales in circulating aqueous systems such as cooling water systems. The method comprises introducing into the aqueous system a compound of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl or substituted aryl; R' and R" are each independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 substituted alkyl; Z is 0, S, NH, or NR, where R is as described above; n is a positive integer greater than 1; f is a positive integer; and M is hydrogen, a water soluble cation (e.g., NH.sub.4.sup.+, alkali metal) or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl group.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for inhibiting polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomers in oxygen-free processing systems are disclosed. The compositions comprise an oxime compound and a hydroxylamine compound and, alternatively, an oxime compound, a hydroxylamine compound and a phenylenediamine compound. The methods comprise adding either of the compositions to the vinyl aromatic monomer in an amount ranging from 1 to about 10,000 parts per million parts monomer.
Abstract: An improved method for inhibiting the polymerization of vinyl aromatic monomer with a hydroxylamine compound is disclosed. The improvement provides for adding a catalytic amount of a phenylenediamine compound to the vinyl aromatic system while replacing any phenylenediamine compound lost as a result of physical removal from the system via the waste stream.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of inhibiting the formation of scales such as barium and strontium sulfate in low pH aqueous system. The method involves treating the aqueous system with a scale control treatment including polyepoxysuccinic acid. Typical low pH aqueous systems where the present invention is particularly useful are oilfield produced water, resin bed water softeners during acid regeneration operations.
Abstract: Methods are provided for inhibiting the corrosion of metals in contact with aqueous systems. Sulfono benzotriazole compounds or their salts are added to these aqueous systems to inhibit the corrosion of metal, such as iron surfaces present in cooling water systems.
Abstract: A method for accelerating the settling of finely divided solids in hydrocarbon fluids comprising adding to the hydrocarbon a sufficient settling amount of a polyacrylic acid adducted alkylphenol-formaldehyde resin alkoxylate compound. Preferably, the hydrocarbon is a fluid catalytic cracker slurry containing spent catalyst fines.

Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for on-line cleaning of the tubes of a heat exchanger. Tube cleaners are comprised of two members, a rigid flotation member and an elastomeric cleaning member. The cleaner has a selected density to allow uniform distribution through the tubes and to allow recovery by surface extraction or by strainers. Pressures as the cleaner enters or flows along a tube may be measured and selected.
Abstract: A method and composition for foam control in non-aqueous systems utilizing polyisobutylene compounds. The method is especially well adapted for use in oil distillation units and coking of crude oil residues.
Abstract: An agglomerating agent for use in the heap leaching of mineral bearing ores is disclosed. The agglomerating agent is a polyvinyl alcohol of moderate to high molecular weight which is partially or fully hydrolyzed. The polyvinyl alcohol agglomerating agent can be used alone or in combination with cement or lime in acidic or alkaline heap leaching operations.
