  • Patent number: 11041369
Abstract: An embodiment of an apparatus includes an actuatable downhole tool with a brush actuator that includes brush elements extending outwardly from a slide member that surrounds a mandrel having a proximal end connectable to a tubular string. The brush elements are sized to engage a casing into which the apparatus is disposed. A spring element is disposed intermediate the slide member and the mandrel to bias the mandrel to a proximal position. A transition mode of the brush elements is achievable by reversing the direction of movement of the apparatus within the casing from the trailing up mode towards the trailing down mode and provides a sufficient amount of resistance to overcome the spring element to move the slide member to a distal position and displace a displaceable member of the actuatable downhole tool to actuate the tool.

  • Patent number: 9771765
Abstract: An umbilical manipulator arm for positioning control lines for being secured to a plurality of tubular strings being made up and run into a dual completion wellbore includes a carriage movable on a base that is securable to a rig floor adjacent to two tubular strings. An umbilical manipulator arm is coupled to the carriage and movable relative to the carriage between a pusher arm retracted position distal to a tubular string and a pusher arm engaged position proximal to a tubular string. The carriage is movable between a carriage first position proximal to a first tubular string and a carriage second position proximal to a second tubular string. The umbilical manipulator arm can be used to position control lines for being secured to the plurality of tubular strings as they are being made up and run into the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 7779902
Abstract: A movable arm 10 engages a flexible line 50 at a well site for positioning the flexible line between run-in position for passing the flexible line with a tubular through a well hole in the rig floor and a clamping position wherein the flexible line is adjacent the tubular above the rig floor for clamping the line to the tubular. The arm 10 extends upward from the rig floor 70, and includes a line guide, such as roller 12, for engaging the flexible line when in the run-in position. A powered drive 14 moves the arm between the run-in position and the clamping position. A spacer 82 may be used for positioning two or more flexible lines at a desired spacing relative to one another prior to positioning the lines within a clamp secured to the tubular. A slip bowl assembly 60 may be laterally movable so that slips do not engage the flexible line as it is run in the well.

  • Patent number: 6951251
Abstract: Junk basket 10 is provided for collecting debris from a wellbore cleaning operation, and includes a central mandrel 14 having a throughbore 16 and an outer shell 24 defining a generally annular junk space 40. The outer shell 24 may be configured such that the annulus 27 includes a reduced portion 28. Flow holes 30 in the outer shell are preferably angled substantially upward, and are positioned to discharge fluid to the annulus 27. According to a method of the invention, fluid is passed from an upper tubing string, through the central mandrel, into the wellbore and upward through the annulus and past the flow holes, thereby reducing pressure of flow past the well holes to pass fluid from the junk space through the flow holes.

  • Patent number: 5669653
Abstract: The backup tong 10, 110 includes a fluid powered cylinder assembly 72, 172. A wedge 80, 180 is provided at the end of a cylinder rod 76, 176 and forces multiple dies into gripping engagement with the tubular. A pair of links 30, 32 or 130, 132 are driven laterally outward from the centerline 28, 128 of the tong body by the wedge 80, 180, thereby forcing the dies to bite the tubular. The design of the tong is relatively simple and has few moving parts, yet is highly rugged and dependable. Dies 62, 64 and 66 or 162, 164 and 166 may together provide circumferential engagement of at least 270.degree. with a tubular, thereby reliably gripping and minimizing damage to the tubular. The tong 10 includes a door jaw latch pin 58, and is particularly well suited for use on dual tubing strings where there is little axial spacing between the tubing strings.

  • Patent number: 5535645
Abstract: A method and apparatus for an open throat power tong is provided to cover the rotary region of the power tong, including the pipe slot, wherein numerous moving parts may cause injury due to accidentally misplaced fingers or hands. Top and bottom movable guard portions, movable between open and closed positions, operate in conjunction with top and bottom fixed guard portions to cover the rotary region. When the movable guard portions are in the open position, hydraulic oil flow to a hydraulic power tong motor is completely blocked rather than diverted so as to avoid slow creep of the motor. Sensors that detect the open and closed position of the guards are placed in series so that all sensors must be shifted to allow tong motor operation. The movable guard portions may be pivotally mounted to a rear segment of the fixed guard portion.

  • Patent number: 5461905
Abstract: Equipment and techniques test the integrity of one or more seals within an oilfield tubular threaded connection 12. A test fixture 74 may be utilized including three axially spaced sensors 92, 86 and 88 which are each responsive to radial deformation of an outer surface of an internally pressurized threaded connection. Excessive radial deformation indicates a failure of at least one of the threaded connection seals. A relatively simple yet highly reliable technique is provided for quickly and easily determining the sealing integrity of a threaded connection made up at a well site. If any one of the multiple seals fails during the test, the operator may either break out and re-test the connection, or may make up and test a new threaded connection. The present invention may be used for substantially increasing the integrity of oilfield tubular connections and thereby reducing the overall cost of hydrocarbon exploration and recovery operations.

  • Patent number: 5335756
Abstract: A slip-type gripping assembly comprises an outer body defining a longitudinal through opening for receipt of the object. A number of slip bodies are circumferentially spaced about the through opening and are radially movable toward and away from the locus of the object. Each slip body is pivotable about a generally longitudinal axis generally circumferentially centered with respect to the slip body as well as about a tangential axis. A respective force transfer formation is cooperative between each slip body and the outer body for transferring radial force therebetween while permitting the pivoting.

  • Patent number: 5150638
Abstract: There are disclosed several embodiments of a power tong for making up or breaking out threaded joints of pipe wherein a head is rotatably mounted on a housing which is held against rotation and both the head and housing have slots adapted to be aligned to permit the tong to be moved onto or removed from a pipe joint. One or more belts are mounted on the head for movement into and out of positions gripping a substantial length of the circumference of the pipe in order to rotate the pipe with the head. The belt or belts are so moved by a hydraulic cylinder which permits the amount of gripping force to be adjusted.

  • Patent number: RE34686
Abstract: A method, system and device for determining the quality of assembly of tool parts involves measurement of the rates of rotation of the tool parts or the torque imposed on the tool parts, or a combination thereof, followed by measurement of axial strain, or torsional strain, or hoop strain, or a combination thereof. The measured data are processed to determine the presence of a shoulder, seizing, seals, extreme hoop pressure, mismatched connections, and the like during assembly of the tool parts, thus assuring quality of assembly. The collected data are plotted versus time and displayed for the operator. The clamping device employed can be a one-part device for measuring hoop strain only, or can be a two-part device for measuring two or more of the aforementioned strain values.
