Abstract: A method in connection with continuous pulp cooking to wash the delignified pulp in a vertical, elongated pressure vessel comprising a cooking zone (1), a main washing zone (3) and a conditioning zone (4) at the bottom of the vessel, where the pulp is further washed and optionally diluted and cooled, said cooking zone being separated from said main washing zone by an interruption zone (2), where diluting/washing liquid displaces the cooking liquor, which is drained via one or several interruption circulation screen girdles (5), while contaminated washing liquid in the conditioning zone is displaced by cleaner washing liquid and is drained via one or several bottom screen girdles (10). At least part of that washing liquid which has been drained through the bottom screen girdle/s/ (10) is passed in counter-current to, but not through, the pulp, i.e.
Abstract: In coating a strip of material, such as web of paper, it is passed over a support member forming one of the enclosing surfaces of a closed chamber. The closed chamber is arranged to operate under vacuum conditions. Coating liquid is supplied in excess to the closed chamber to form a layer on the surface of the strip. At the end of the coating action, as the strip leaves the closed chamber, it is contacted by a movably positionable blade which provides a wiping-off action on the strip so as to remove the excess of coating liquid from the strip. The vacuum inside the closed chamber urges the blade against the strip. Therefore, it is possible, by varying the vacuum, to vary the amount of coating liquid adhering to the strip leaving the closed chamber.
Abstract: A coating composition is applied to a paper web while the web passes over an opening in a box in which a partial vacuum is maintained. The opening is divided into two sections by means of a support member disposed perpendicular to the direction of travel of the web. The coating composition is applied to the web in the downstream section of the opening, and the upstream section is considerably greater in area than the downstream section to create a tension on the web and thereby eliminate unstretched areas in the web.
Abstract: A chamber having an opening in its wall contains a roller. A portion of the surface of the roller is situated in the opening. A web is continuously moved past the chamber so as to cover the opening. A vacuum is created in the chamber. The external pressure forces the web into contact with the roller. A coating liquid is supplied into the chamber so as to wet the roller. The roller is rotated so that the coating liquid is transferred to the web.
Abstract: Air is circulated through a body of wood chips at a rate sufficient for maintaining a uniform temperature and oxygen content throughout the body of wood chips. Fresh air is supplied at a rate sufficient for keeping the oxygen content of the circulating air at 16% by volume, at least. The temperature is maintained at 35.degree.-80.degree. C. This process results in a rapid seasoning of the natural resin, of the wood chips, making it possible to use the wood chips for pulping after 1-4 days only.
Abstract: When bleaching wood pulp with oxygen the result can be improved if formaldehyde, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, glycerol, sorbitol, formic acid, or acetone is added to the pulp.
