  • Patent number: 5811677
Abstract: Apparatus for determining levels of immiscible fluids in a vessel that includes a transmission line sensor that extends vertically within the vessel for contact with fluids within the vessel. A generator is coupled to the sensor for transmitting along the sensor a first electrical signal that continuously sweeps a predetermined frequency range. A voltage detector is coupled to the sensor for providing a second electrical signal that varies as a function of the amplitude of electrical energy reflected at the sensor from the various electrical impedance discontinuities along the sensor, including particularly interfaces between and within immiscible fluids surrounding the sensor. The frequency spectral characteristics of the second electrical signal are analyzed to determine the spatial distribution of electrical impedance along the sensor, from which the levels of immiscible fluids within the vessel are determined.

  • Patent number: 5644299
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating material level that includes a pair of ultrasonic transducers on opposed sides of a space for receiving the material at the level to be detected. A swept frequency oscillator is coupled to one of the transducers so that the transducer radiates into the material space ultrasonic energy that continuously sweeps back and forth between a low frequency range at which such energy is transmitted to the other transducer by resonance of the entire apparatus and independent of presence of material in the material space, and a higher frequency range at which such energy is transmitted to the other transducer only when material is present in the space between the transducers. Detection circuitry indicates presence of material between the transducers upon receipt of the higher frequency energy, and failure of the apparatus upon failure to receive the lower frequency energy.

  • Patent number: 5164555
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the level of flowable material in a storage bin that includes a motor mounted within a protective enclosure and coupled by a shaft and clutch arrangement to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material therewithin. When the material reaches the level of the paddle, drag on the paddle causes the motor to rotate within the enclosure against the force of an adjustable spring to activate switches disposed within the enclosure for indicating material level. The switches also remove power from the motor and apply power to an electrical resistance heater to warm the enclosure and help prevent condensation at low external ambient temperature. The paddle is constructed to enhance drag when used in conjunction with low-density materials.

  • Patent number: 5164606
Abstract: A system for sensing the presence of or level of material within a vessel that includes a light transmitting probe extending into the vessel through a wall of the vessel from externally thereof. The probe has a lens with a closed end within the vessel for contact with the material sought to be detected, and a light source/sensor unit positioned externally of the vessel. The light source/sensor unit directs light energy through the lens of the probe to the closed end of the lens, which is within the vessel. The source/sensor unit detects the presence of material in contact with the closed end of the lens as a function of light energy reflected back to the source/sensor unit. The light source/sensor unit is removably mounted on the lens so that the source/sensor unit may be removed from the lens for service without removing the lens itself from the vessel wall.

  • Patent number: 5103213
Abstract: A photo-optical coupler is connected to a shaft to provide a series of electronic pulses at a frequency corresponding to rotational velocity of the shaft. Apparatus electronics is responsive to frequency of such pulses for indicating a low speed alarm condition when such frequency is below a preselected threshold. The apparatus electronics includes a digital counter that is set to a first preselected count upon occurrence of each of the shaft rotation pulses, and which is thereafter decremented between the shaft rotation pulses. A low speed alarm condition is indicated if the counter reaches a count of zero prior to a succeeding shaft rotation pulse. In the preferred embodiment, the counter is decremented by an oscillator having a clock frequency coordinated with the first preselected count so as to activate the alarm when rotational velocity of the shaft decreases to a predetermined threshold percentage of a nominal rotational velocity of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4163917
Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer and a method for manufacture thereof in which a piezoelectric crystal is bonded to a flat diaphragm with the neutral bending axis of the crystal/diaphragm combination being within the bonding agent. The diaphragm is then pressed into the open end of a hollow shell. The resonant frequency of the shell, diaphragm and crystal combination is determined by the extent to which the diaphragm is pressed into the shell and, in the preferred example disclosed, is set at about 19.8 KHz. The shell cavity is then filled with a mixture of RTV and a nonconductive particulate material at a weight ratio between 5/1 and 20/1. This mixture lowers the Q of the transducer while also raising its resonant frequency to the desired 20 KHz.

  • Patent number: 4147906
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the level of flowable material in a storage bin comprising a motor rotatably suspended by a spring within a protective enclosure and a drive shaft coupled by a ball-and-detent clutch to a paddle disposed within the bin to engage material therein. When the material reaches the level of the paddle, the drag on the paddle causes the motor to rotate eccentrically within the enclosure and thereby to activate switches disposed within the enclosure radially of the motor housing. A spring returns the motor to the switch-deactivated position when the material level decreases and the consequent drag is removed from the paddle.
