Abstract: Lipids (including fatty acids) are extracted from animal solids such as powdered, freeze dried or fresh meat of green lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) by mixing said solids with a solvent such as acetone capable of dissolving lipids therefrom to form a solvent extract, removing solvent from said extract by nanofiltration to produce a concentrated lipid extract and recovered solvent, and removing further solvent from the concentrated extract by rotary evaporation to leave extracted lipids particularly rich in eicosatetraenoic acids (ETA's).

Abstract: A synergistic effect is obtained in the treatment of combined omega-3 series polyunsaturated fatty acids and flavonoids in the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, and other inflammatory conditions. The fatty acids are extracted from the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Perna canaliculus.

Abstract: A pharmaceutical or veterinary composition comprises a hyaluronic acid or a salt thereof or an ester of hyaluronic acid with an alcohol of the aliphatic, heterocyclic or cycloaliphatic series, or a sulphated form of hyaluronic acid, together with at least one eicosanoid or tetraenoic polyunsaturated fatty acid or an ester or a salt thereof, preferably in the form of an extract of fatty acids from the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Perna canaliculus. The compositions are active against inflammatory conditions including osteoarthritis.
