Abstract: Chemically reactive dyes that are intramolecularly crosslinked with a water-soluble bridge, their bioconjugates and their uses are described. Reactive fluorescent dyes that have a water-soluble bridge are superior to those of conjugates of spectrally non-crosslinked dyes or the dyes that are crosslinked with a hydrophobic bridge. The invention includes reactive fluorescent dyes, their biological conjugates and uses.

Abstract: Chemically reactive 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives and their application for analyzing cell function, for example in combination with additional fluorescent labels. The coumarin derivatives exhibit a strong absorption at 405 nm and high fluorescence quantum yields.

Abstract: Azo heterocyclic compounds that are substantially non-fluorescent or only weakly fluorescent useful as energy acceptors. The chemically reactive compounds possess utility for labeling a wide variety of substances, including biomolecules with the resulted conjugates being highly useful for a variety of energy-transfer assays and applications. The biological conjugates of the disclosure exhibit little or no observable fluorescence and their fluorescence is significantly increased upon a biological stimulation.
Abstract: Methods for performing a direct enzymatic reaction involving a nucleic acid molecule include performing the enzymatic reaction directly using a biological specimen in a reaction mixture containing a zwitterionic buffer and/or a non-reducing carbohydrate to prevent the biological specimen from inhibiting the enzymatic reaction, in which a nucleic acid molecule present in the biological specimen is not purified before the enzymatic reaction, and obtaining a product from the enzymatic reaction.

Abstract: Fluorescent dyes useful for preparing fluorescent metal ion indicators, the fluorescent indicators themselves, and the use of the fluorescent indicators for the detection, discrimination and quantification of metal cations.
Abstract: This invention describes an electromagnetic wave-absorbing surface modified magnetic particle for use in medical applications. The magnetic particles are coated with an amphipathic organic compound and an amphipathic vesicle forming lipid. These particles may be used in a method of treatment of cancer, as well as for the treatment of infectious disease. For cancer treatment the invention comprises providing a patient said coated particles, absorbing the coated particle intracellularly into the cancer cell, and subjecting the patient to an alternating electromagnetic field to inductively heat the magnetic core particle along with the cancer cells. The inductive heating of the magnetic core particle is then continued so as to achieve an increase in intracellular temperature which selectively kills the cancer cells.
Abstract: A liposome composition which comprises a substantially uniform sized inorganic core coated with an amphipathic organic compound and further coated with a second amphipathic vesicle forming lipid. Also disclosed are novel phenyl lipid compounds which serve as the amphipathic vesicle forming lipid and methods are described for delivering a drug for slow release into the blood stream, and for targeting a selected tissue or cells with the inorganic core liposome compositions.

Abstract: Subdomain metal or metal oxide particles covalently coupled to chemically reactive organic moieties and subsequently reacted together to form biodegradable magnetic microclusters are disclosed. The magnetic microcluster can be used as contrast agents in NMR imaging for the production of images suitable for use in diagnosis, for in vivo delivery and targeting of drugs, as in vivo, biodegradable agents for the sequestering of free metal ions in the treatment of metal driven disease.
