  • Patent number: 7522762
Abstract: An image analysis workstation for analyzing optical thin film arrays is disclosed. One disclosed embodiment relates to individual arrays that comprise a single optical thin film test surface that provides a plurality of discretely addressable locations, each comprising an immobilized capture reagent for an analyte of interest. These are referred to herein as “arrayed optical thin film test surfaces.” Preferably, an individual arrayed optical thin film test surface comprises at least 4, more preferably at least 16, even more preferably at least 32, still more preferably at least 64, and most preferably 128 or more discretely addressable locations. One or more of the discretely addressable locations may provide control signals (e.g., for normalizing signals and/or that act as positive and/or negative controls) or fiducial signals (i.e., information that is used to determine the relative alignment of the arrayed optical thin film test surface within the device.

  • Patent number: 6770447
Abstract: The present invention involves an optical assay device and method of use for the detection of an analyte of interest in a sample that conveniently allows control of the flow characteristics of the sample through the device without significant user intervention. The optical assay device includes a base having an absorbent material, and a member having an optically active test stack that is rotatably coupled to the base for rotation between a lowered position and a raised position. In the lowered position, the optically active test stack contacts the absorbent material for drawing the sample through the surface. In the raised position, the optically active test stack does not contact the absorbent material.

  • Patent number: 6483585
Abstract: A modified and improved polarizier ellipsometer allows for improved signal quality and signal to noise performance. This improvement is based on rotating one polarizer relative to the other fixed polarizer to generate AC mode signals related to a thin film under analysis. The AC mode signal may be compared to a background signal and the ratio of sample signal to background signal used to provide a more accurate assessment of film thickness. The normalized AC signal for an unknown thickness may be compared to a standard curve generated for a film of similar optical properties for an exact thickness determination or may be used directly to report a relative thickness value. Other modifications of the improved polarizer ellipsometer of the invention are also described where one or both of the fixed polarizers are removed to improve the signal intensity through reduction of the number of optical components. These modifications are designed to address specific thin film and substrate combinations.

  • Patent number: 5922583
Abstract: The invention relates to a culture system for stable and high-level production of DNA contained on recombinant plasmids, and to the bacteria and plasmids which comprise the culture system. The bacterial cell chromosome is irreversibly altered, in one embodiment, so as to produce a substance toxic to the bacterium; in a second embodiment so as to render the cells unable to synthesize and assimilate an essential metabolite, and, in a third embodiment, to be incapable of producing a required intracellular protein that does not lead to a secreted product. In every case, the recombinant plasmid includes genetic material which functionally complements the chromosomal alteration. If the DNA on the plasmid is to be used in therapeutic applications or for administration to eukaryotes, the genetic material will have no functional or structural equivalent in eukaryotic cells, and will not result in production of mRNA or a polypeptide that acts on any eukaryotic cell component.
