Abstract: The present invention is concerned with controllably dissolvable silica-xerogels prepared via sol-gel process and their use. Specifically, the invention is concerned with a delivery device comprising controllably dissolvable silica-xerogel into which structure a biologically active agent is incorporated. The invention is further concerned with pharmaceutical preparations comprising said delivery device. Further, the invention is directed to medical devices for orthopedic and surgical purposes comprising controllably dissolvable silica-xerogels, which may further comprise a biologically active agent.

Abstract: A composite intended for medical use, in particular surgical or therapeutic use, characterized in that it comprises a mixture of
a thermoplastic component plasticizable within the temperature range −10° . . . +100° C., which is substantially made up of hydroxy acids and structural units derived from hydroxy acid derivatives and the molar mass of which is within the range 30,000-1,000,000 g/mol, and which degrades in the body typically within a period ranging from a few days to several years, and which in its solid state is a mechanically strong plastic or rubbery material, and
a bioactive component, which is a bioactive glass or a bioactive xerogel,
such that the plasticized thermoplastic component remains moldable for a certain period even after the temperature of the composite has been lowered to a temperature which is considerably lower than the setting temperature of said thermoplastic component.

Abstract: A pharmaceutical preparation, including a glass phase which is bioactive silica containing glass in the form of a paste, suspension or solution mixed in a physiologically suitable liquid or bound to a physiologically suitable vehicle, and which preparation reduces the pulpal irritation or a tooth and/or strengthens the structure of a tooth. Bioactive silica containing glass may be a material which contains only Si-oxide or Si-hydroxide and which allows the formation and movement of Si--OH-groups. Preferably, the preparation also contains calcium and phosphate sources.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the preparation of the fibre product pre-impregnated with a polymer (prepreg) where the method includes: a) coating the fibres with a powder comprising at least one polymer and optionally an agent having the ability to initiate the polymerization reaction of the polymer, b) adding to the composition obtained in step a) a solvent possessing the ability to dissolve the polymer but lacking the ability to initiate the polymerization reaction of the polymer, and c) evaporating the solvent. Alternatively, the polymer (optionally including the initiating agent) can first be dissolved in the solvent after which the fibres are contacted with the solution thus obtained and the solvent is evaporated. The surface of the fibres is preferably treated so as to facilitate the bonding of the polymer to the fibres, whereafter the surface treated fibres are coated with the polymer powder.
