    Abstract: A torque spanner (or other tool for tightening threaded fastenings) which can be carried by the operator in his hand. The spanner incorporates a strain gauge which is arranged to provide an electrical output voltage dependent on the torque applied. An indicating device, operated from the strain gauge, is arranged to indicate to the operator when the torque has reached a prescribed value.
