  • Patent number: 7591195
Abstract: A torque sensor that includes a sensor housing, a sensor input member at least partially received in the sensor housing, a sensor output member at least partially received in the sensor housing, a torsionally resilient coupling member that couples the sensor input member to the sensor output member and an optical sensor system that includes a light source, one or more encoders and one or more optical sensors. The encoder or encoders periodically transmit light between the light source and the at least one optical sensor based on an amount of relative rotation between the sensor input member and the sensor output member.

  • Patent number: 7588063
Abstract: A planer and thicknesser comprising a frame having a passageway that substantially extends through the frame. The planer and thicknesser further comprises an upper table having front and rear sections mounted on the frame, wherein a slot is located between the front and rear sections of the upper table, and a lower table moveably mounted within the passageway. The planer and thicknesser also comprises a cutting drum rotatably mounted within the frame such that a portion of the cutting drum projects upwardly through the slot and a portion of the cutting drum projects downwardly into the passage way. The planer and thicknesser also comprises a cover mounted above the upper table capable of being moved from a first position where it covers a portion of the cutting drum to a second position where it does not cover a portion of the cutting drum.

  • Patent number: 7588400
Abstract: A router depth adjustment device includes a shaft with a first and a second end, a handle disposed on the first end of the shaft, for rotating the shaft, and a mechanical connection disposed on the second end. The mechanical connection is configured to couple with a corresponding mechanical connection on a depth adjustment shaft of a router. A depth adjustment indexing system includes an adjustment knob slidably mounted on the shaft and an indexer pivotally mounted to the adjustment knob. The adjustment knob and the indexer are capable of pivoting independently and pivoting simultaneously. The adjustment knob is configured such that rotation of the adjustment knob rotates the shaft.

  • Patent number: 7588095
Abstract: Provided are various embodiments of structures that may utilized in a power driver, particularly in a power driver having an optional reciprocating “hammer” action, that may be utilized for retaining an outer bearing during driver assembly and during subsequent operation of the power driver. In particular, the disclosed structures provide one or more surfaces, particularly inner peripheral surfaces, that limit the outward axial movement of the bearing. These structures may include combinations of surfaces defined by retaining members including, for example, one or more flanges, clips and threaded members, an input shaft, biasing mechanisms, typically a spring or other resilient structure, and chuck shield assemblies for positioning the outer bearing within the power driver.

  • Publication number: 20090224703
Abstract: A motor control module designed to control operation of a plurality of different motors in a plurality of different tools a power tool uses an electronic clutch in the module in conjunction with a mechanical clutch in the tool to protect the tool against an overload event. The module is adapted to implement methods to provide aural and/or tactile feedback to a tool user as a warning of an impending or current fault condition in the tool. The module can prevent power from inadvertently turning on either after an overload event has cleared with the tool plugged in and its power switch on, or after plugging in the tool within the power switch on. The control module is adapted to provide torque control for the power tool, to estimate tool motor temperature and to inform a tool user when a servicing need in the tool is required.

  • Publication number: 20090223786
Abstract: A universal termination system is provided for power tools. The universal termination system includes criteria for each of the main switch platforms that define the number, type, location and orientation of the terminations. That is, the number, type, location and orientation of the terminations in each main switch platform are standardized and the power tools that use that type main switch platform use the main switch platform having the standardized terminations. That is, power tools that use push button switches use the push button switch with the standardized terminations, power tools that use overhang switches use the overhang switch with the standardized terminations, and power tools that use in-line VSR switches use the in-line VSR switch with the standardized terminations. In an aspect of the invention, a right-angle pin terminal is received in one or more sets of the standardized terminations.

  • Publication number: 20090223337
Abstract: A power tool for cutting a workpiece including a casing, an auxiliary handle assembly extending from the casing, a motor disposed at least partially in the casing, and a drive transmission operably coupled to the motor. The drive transmission outputs a driving force in response to an input from the motor. A spindle locking mechanism is provided that is selectively positionable between a retracted position spaced apart from the drive transmission and a locked position engaging the drive transmission. The spindle lock mechanism thereby prevents rotation of the drive transmission in response to actuation of a pad member. The pad member can be positioned adjacent to the auxiliary handle to permit single-handed holding of the power tool and actuation of the pad member.

  • Publication number: 20090221221
Abstract: A reduced height quarter sheet sander has a housing having first and second halves mated together. An upper portion of the housing provides a handle. An electric motor is disposed in the housing. The electric motor has a stator and an armature. The stator has field coils and the armature has an armature shaft on which a commutator is affixed. A pair of brush boxes is disposed in the housing on opposite sides of the commutator. The brush boxes lie in a horizontal elevation when the sander is upright. An orbit mechanism is coupled to the armature shaft and a platen is coupled to the orbit mechanism. In an aspect, a switch disposed in the handle of the housing and a terminal block (at which a cordset that enters the housing terminates) disposed in the handle of the housing have generally the same horizontal elevation as the brush boxes (when the sander is upright).
