  • Patent number: 7182937
Abstract: A composition for reducing dentinal hypersensitivity and remineralizing exposed dentinal surface and open dentinal tubules, comprising a non-aqueous carrier and a desensitizing amount of a desensitizing/remineralizing agent which consists essentially of a water soluble calcium salt and an incompatible ingredient which would otherwise react with the calcium salt. Upon contact with saliva when applied to an oral cavity, the desensitizing/remineralizing is then formed in situ by the reaction between the calcium salt and the incompatible ingredient, thereby remineralizing exposed dentinal surface and open dentinal tubules.

  • Patent number: 6416745
Abstract: The present invention provides dental compositions and methods for treating dentinal hypersensitivity teeth based on the discovery that anionic liposomes possess the capacity to induce mineral formation in the dentinal tubules which partially or fully block them. The subject compositions comprise the liposomes and a suitable carrier and are advantageous in that they can deliver additional agents useful in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, particularly nerve desensitizing agents, to the tubules. The liposomes of the invention are further advantageous in that they are stable to conventional sources of fluoride ion conventionally used as anti-caries agents. The methods of the present invention utilize the subject composition to effect blocking of the dentinal tubules and to simultaneously deliver other treatment agents such as nerve desensitizing agents for the combined benefits thereof.

  • Patent number: 6241972
Abstract: A desensitizing agent for the cleaning and treatment of sensitive teeth comprising a copolymer having repeating hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions. Preferred examples include polysoaps such as: a monovalent salt of a hydrolyzed copolymer of an &agr;-olefin and maleic anhydride:, e.g., structually represented as: The copolymer forms micelles in aqueous dispersions such as toothpaste and mouthwash formulations. When applied thereon by brushing or rinsing or other method of application, the copolymers occlude the tubules and seal them off from the external oral environment and thereby alleviate the pain caused by the tooth's sensitivity.
