  • Publication number: 20160023967
Abstract: Processes for the production of chlorinated alkanes are provided. The present processes comprise dehydrochlorinating one or more trichloroalkanes having from 3-6 carbon atoms and vicinal chlorine atoms, followed by a series of sequential chlorination and/or further dehydrochlorination steps. Because the trichloroalkane is first dehydrochlorinated, rather than being first chlorinated, greater specificity to desired tetra- and pentachloroalkanes can be seen.

  • Patent number: 9233896
Abstract: Processes for the production of chlorinated propenes are provided wherein a dehydrochlorination reaction occurs prior to a first chlorination reaction. The present processes make use of at least one reactor twice, i.e., at least two reactions occur in the same reactor. Cost and time savings are thus provided. Additional savings can be achieved by conducting more than two chlorination reactions, or all chlorination reactions, in one chlorination reactor, and/or by conducting more than two dehydrochlorination reactions, or all dehydrochlorination reactions, within a single dehydrochlorination reactor.

Abstract: Processes for the production of chlorinated propanes are provided. The processes comprise catalyzing the chlorination of 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane with aluminum chloride, either alone or in combination with ferric chloride. Low intensity conditions are appropriate for the process, e.g., temperatures of from ambient to 100° C. and pressures of from ambient to 200 psig may be used. Even though low intensity conditions are used, the aluminum chloride provides at least 1.5 times greater the conversion rate and/or productivity of 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane as compared to ferric chloride when used as a single catalyst under similar processing conditions.
