Patent number: 7383711Abstract: Embodiments of a leveler that may be controlled by a computer are provided. The leveler may include a top frame that has at least a first set of rolls mounted thereon. The top frame includes a plurality of operatively associated ball screw assemblies that enable movement of the top frame with respect to a bottom frame of the leveler. The bottom frame has at least a second set of rolls mounted thereon. The leveler may further include at least one motor operatively associated with the plurality of ball screw assemblies. The motor is designed to drive the plurality of ball screw assemblies to move the top frame. The motor may also have at least one operatively associated encoder configured for monitoring or communicating data associated with rotation of the ball screw assemblies. The leveler may also include at least one position transmitter configured for monitoring a position of at least a portion of the top frame relative to a position of at least a portion of the bottom frame.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2005Date of Patent: June 10, 2008Assignee: Blue IP, Inc.Inventor: James N. Patent number: 7134372Abstract: A machine for slitting a metal sheet has a number of knife holder assemblies each containing a rotary knife. The knife holder assemblies are mounted for movement along upper and lower rotating shafts which rotate the knives during a slitting operation. The position of the knife holder assemblies is programmably controlled for efficient and accurate positioning and adjustment of the knives along the rotating shafts for a variety of slitting configurations. Additionally, each of the upper and lower drive shafts contains a pair of drive shaft sections that are normally connected together during operation and can be disconnected for servicing of the knife holder assemblies on the shafts. The slitting machine includes upper and lower frames that are movable relative to each other by adjustment of a pair of jack screws to slit metal sheets of differing thicknesses without labor intensive adjustment or reconfiguration of the machine.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2001Date of Patent: November 14, 2006Assignee: Blue IP, Inc.Inventors: Patrick M. Flaherty, Rick L. Ahrns, Charles G. Rutschilling

Publication number: 20050229762Abstract: A machine (100) for slitting a metal sheet has a number of knife assemblies (112) each containing a rotary knife (110). The knife assemblies (112) are mounted for movement along upper and lower arbors (104, 106) which rotate the knives (110) during a slitting operation. Upper and lower knife assembly positioning devices (114) are operable to releasably grasp the knife assemblies (112) for movement of the knife assemblies (112) to predetermined positions along the upper and lower arbors (104, 106).Type: ApplicationFiled: May 30, 2003Publication date: October 20, 2005Applicant: BLUE IP, INC.Inventors: Patrick Flaherty, Rick Ahrns, Charles Rutschilling, Kenneth Balster, Xingyun Qu

Patent number: 6637997Abstract: A capstan for handling slitting tools comprises a base, a pivoting frame, an outer frame and a plurality of shafts. The pivoting frame is supported by the base for pivotal movement about an axis. The outer frame is supported by the rotating frame for translational movement along the axis. The plurality of shafts extends from the outer frame transversely to the axis. The capstan preferably further includes an axial actuator for translating the outer frame relative to the pivoting frame along the axis. This permits an attendant to raise or lower the outer frame, and, hence, raise or lower the shafts. By thus raising or lowering the shafts, the attendant can adjust the height of the shafts to a comfortable level for loading or unloading knives and spacers without excessive lifting or bending. An optional pusher serves to automatically slide the tools between the capstan and the slitter machine.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Blue IP, Inc.Inventors: Rick L.
