Abstract: A discriminant neural network and a method of training the network are disclosed. The network includes a set of hidden nodes having associated weights, and the number of hidden nodes is minimized by the training method of the invention. The training method includes the steps of 1) loading a training data set and assigning it to a residual data set, 2) computing a vector associated with a first hidden node using the residual data set, 3) projecting training data onto a hyperplane associated with said first hidden node, 4) determining the number and locations of hard-limiter thresholds associated with the first node, and 5) repeating the above for successive hidden nodes after removing satisfied subsets from the training data until all partitioned regions of the input data space are satisfied.

Abstract: Antibodies against Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 were raised by immunizing rabbits with two types of IP.sub.3 -BSA conjugates which were synthesized by covalently coupling Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 to the carrier protein via alkyl linkages. The anti-Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 antibodies were detected by an ELISA where Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 was covalently attached to a microplate well surface. Both antiserum preparations showed specific binding with Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3. The specificity of these antibodies was enhanced by affinity purification for the antiserum through Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 -agarose chromatography. The affinity-purified antibodies have IC.sub.50 values of 12 nM and 73OnM for Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P.sub.4, respectively. These antibodies showed many properties similar to those of biologically relevant receptors for Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3.

Abstract: A disk storage architecture called DCD, Disk Caching Disk, for optimizing I/O performance. The DCD uses a small log disk, referred to as cache-disk, in the range of tens of MB as a secondary disk cache to optimize write performance. While the cache-disk and the normal data disk have the same physical properties, the access speed of the former differs dramatically from the latter because of different data units and different ways in which data are accessed. The objective is to exploit this speed difference by using the log disk as a cache to build a reliable and smooth disk hierarchy.

Abstract: This invention disclosed (2S,3R)-3(6-aminopurin-9-yl) aralkan-2-ols, a novel class of adenine derivatives (also called 9-aralkyladenines, ARADS), which have been shown to inhibit the enzyme adenosine deaminase at therapeutically useful levels. The relevant inhibitory constant (K.sub.i) values are in the range of 10.sup.-7 -10.sup.-10 M. These compounds with potencies in this range can reversibly inhibit ADA in an effective manner, without permanently deactivating the enzyme. ADA inhibitors that have similar biological profiles have been shown to be of therapeutic value when used to protect heart muscle against ischemic damage.

Abstract: Two types of structural analogues of D-myo-inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate [Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.4 ] are prepared by a chemo-enzymatic route. These 6-O-substituted analogues retain the biological activity of Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 and are able to elicit Ca.sup.2+ release from porcine brain microsomes. Moreover, these analogues allow the preparation of Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3 -based immunogens and affinity matrix which are successfully applied to the preparation and purification of antibodies against Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3. These antibodies display discriminative affinity toward Ins(1,4,5)P.sub.3, and provide a useful tool to study intracellular Ca.sup.2+ mobilization.

Abstract: A cache memory system for use during vector processing in a processor. The processor contains a central processing unit (CPU) and a main memory. The system includes a vector cache memory, a first address register, a main memory address calculation unit, and a cache address calculation unit. The first register stores a first address associated with an instruction executed by the CPU. The main memory address calculation unit is coupled to the first address register for calculating a second address utilizing the first address and vector stride data associated with said executed instruction. The second address is utilized to access the main memory. The cache address calculation unit is coupled to both the first address register and the main memory address calculation unit for calculating the third address utilizing portions of the first address and portions of the second address. The third address is utilized to access the vector cache memory.

Abstract: Electrochromic material, i.e. polyaniline, is polymerized in situ in a polymeric electrolyte to form an electrochromic/polyelectrolyte mixture. The mixture is coated as a film on electrochromic material. A film of electrolyte is placed in ion transfer relationship with the electrochromic/polyelectrolyte film. This electrochromic/polyaniline/polyelectrolyte film greatly increases the ion transfer between the electrochromic film and the electrolytic film by imposing a region of molecularly mixed electrochromic material and electrolyte.

Abstract: A signal processing apparatus and method for iteratively determining the inverse Arithmetic Fourier Transform (AFT) of an input signal by converting the input signal, which represents Fourier coefficients of a function that varies in relation to time, space, or other independent variable, into a set of output signals representing the values of a Fourier series associated with the input signal. The signal processing apparatus and method utilize a process in which a data set of samples is used to iteratively compute a set of frequency samples, wherein each computational iteration utilizes error information which is calculated between the initial data and data synthesized using the AFT. The iterative computations converge and provide AFT values at the Farey-fraction arguments which are consistent with values given by a zero-padded Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), thus obtaining dense frequency domain samples without interpolation or zero-padding.
