  • Patent number: 7341552
Abstract: The present invention provides a number of gene markers whose expression is altered in various gliomas. In particular, by examining the expression these markers, one can accurately classify a glioma as glioblastoma multiforme (GM), anaplastic astrocytoma (AA), anaplastic oligodendroglioma (AO) or oligodendroglioma (OL). The diagnosis may be performed on nucleic acids, for example, using a DNA microarray, or on protein, for example, using immunologic means. Also disclosed are methods of therapy.

  • Publication number: 20080058642
Abstract: A method of detecting endothelin receptor A mediated coronary microvascular endothelial dysfunction in an asymptomatic subject is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining sets of noninvasive cardiac PET perfusion images of the subject before and after administration of selective endothelin receptor A (ETA receptor) antagonist. The images are analyzed, including application of applying Markovian homogeneity analysis, and the results are compared to detect improvement, or lack of improvement, of myocardial perfusion homogeneity in the subject. A result of improved myocardial perfusion homogeneity after administration of the antagonist indicates the presence of ETA receptor-mediated microvascular endothelial dysfunction in the subject and indicates therapeutic treatment to improve endothelial function and/or to reduce coronary artery disease risk factors.

  • Patent number: 7338758
Abstract: The present invention is directed to the identification of markers that can be used to determine whether tumors are sensitive or resistant to a therapeutic agent. The present invention is also directed to the identification of therapeutic targets. The invention features a number of “sensitivity markers.” These are markers that are expressed in most or all cell lines that are sensitive to treatment with an agent and which are not expressed (or are expressed at a rather low level) in cells that are resistant to treatment with that agent. The invention also features a number of “resistance markers.” These are markers that are expressed in most or all cell lines that are resistant to treatment with an agent and which are not expressed (or are expressed at a rather low level) in cells that are sensitive to treatment with that agent. The invention also features marker sets that can predict patients that are likely to respond or not to respond to an agent.

  • Publication number: 20080051627
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method and system to facilitate endoscopic insertion of a balloon into tissues, such as submucosal tissues, and optional resection of tissues elevated by the balloon when inflated. The system includes an endoscope with a delivery system for a detachable balloon having a seal. The balloon can be inserted under the tissue, such as a submucosal insertion, and inflated. The balloon can then be untethered from the delivery system and deployed submucosally while the endoscope is manipulated around the affected area and the affected tissue knife resected. The endoscope can be retracted from the area. The balloon can be made of biodegradable material that can dissolve or be absorbed over a period of time. The system and method can be applied to other areas and medical procedures that require insertion of a balloon for a period of time.

  • Publication number: 20080051373
Abstract: Parenteral preparations of phospholipid-associated anti-inflammatories (PL-AIs) are described to treat pain/inflammation, with reduced gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity. The PL-AIs can be composed of phosphatidylcholine (“PC”) associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (“NSAIDs”). To prepare the PL-AIs, a phospholipid is mixed with an NSAID in a polar solvent, solvent is removed, suspended in an aqueous medium and sterilized by filtration or other acceptable method. Alternatively, the phospholipid can be mixed with an injectable preparation of an NSAID. The PL-AIs, and particularly PC associated with the NSAIDs, indomethacin, ibuprofen or diclofenac are useful for treating Patent Ductus Arteriosus in low birth weight infants to reduce the incidence of GI injury that may be manifest as Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) or Spontaneous Intestinal Perforation (SIP).
