Abstract: A process and system are disclosed for the biofiltration of volatile organic compounds. The process involved recirculating contaminated effluent gas through a biofilter (1), the biofilter (1) having an inlet (20), outlet (15) and micro-organism laden filter media bed (3). The filter media bed additionally having moisture retaining properties. This process has been effective in removing high levels of VOCs from effluent gas streams and also in removing VOCs from an effluent gas stream where the VOC levels and/or volumes of effluent gas vary over time.

Abstract: An effluent treatment system for removing effluent gases from a gas stream including a packing having a plurality of randomly arranged elements of calcareous material. The elements may be spent shells of shellfish, especially half mussel shells and have a liquid retention portion which may form an individual liquid reservoir depending on the orientation of the element with the packing. Suitable bacteria are retained in at least some of the reservoirs. The system may be operated as a biofilter or a bioscrubber.

Abstract: An effluent treatment system 1, 70, 80 for treating effluent which has passed through a primary treatment step such as a septic tank 50 comprises a container 5 having inlets 7 for effluent and outlets 8 for filtered effluent. The container 5 contains a biological treatment medium 41 comprising a homogeneous mixture of young Sphagnum peat and an organic peat fibre. The medium 41 is covered by a layer 40 of peat fibre for distributing the effluent and another layer 44 of peat fibre is provided below the medium 41 to induce flow of treated effluent to the outlets 34.
