Abstract: An improved process for the production of polyolefins in an autoclave reactor having several reaction zones operated at a pressure of 100 to 300 MPa and a temperature of 100 to 300.degree. C. is disclosed. Dunng operation, temperatures are measured continuously inside the autoclave reactor at specific points distributed along the reactor length, each of said measured temperatures is compared with a corresponding preset temperature and the detected deviation between each pair of preset and measured temperatures is used in regulating the amount of monomer and initiator fed into the autoclave through several feed inlets distributed along the reactor length, in order to minimize the temperature deviations and thus obtain an improved control of the polymerization process.

  • Patent number: 5869418
Abstract: Olefins or mixtures of olefins, particularly propene or mixtures of propene advantageously with ethene, can be polymerized using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst system containing, besides a transition-metal-based procatalyst and cocatalyst which is an organometallic compound, a compound particularly suited for controlling the stereospecificity of the produced polymer. Such a compound called an external donor may also have other effects. By using an acetal derivative of an aldehyde that has two ether groups for this purpose, advantageously selected from the group of dialkoxyphenylalkanes, e.g., dimethoxyphenylpropane, a good stereospecificity of the product is attained combined with the high hydrogen sensitivity of the catalyst system, whereby the use of hydrogen as the chain transfer agent offers an easy control method of the molecular weight of the product by means of adjusting the amount of hydrogen available in the polymerization reaction.

  • Patent number: 5468698
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for preparing a particulate carrier for an olefin polymerization procatalyst comprising a complex of an organic compound/transition metal compound as a carrier. In the method a melt MgCl.sub.2 --C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH-complex is provided containing on average 3.3 to 5.5 C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH-molecules per each MgCl.sub.2 -molecule, the melt MgCl.sub.2 -complex is sprayed through a nozzle dispersing it into a chamber, wherein a particulate carrier is formed of it and the particulate carrier is removed from the chamber. Unlike prior known methods to produce a carrier having an optimal C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH content in this invention the removal rate--by the aid of heat--of C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH from the MgCl.sub.2 --C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH-complex in connection with the spraying that the particulate carrier is controlled. As a result, the particulate carrier obtained possesses on average 2.0 to 3.2 C.sub.2 H.sub.5 OH molecules per each MgCl.sub.2 molecule. Such a carrier has a suitable C.sub.2 H.

  • Patent number: 5436213
Abstract: It is known that an electron donor together with a compound of tetravalent titanium on a magnesium halide carrier is usable if it is a mono- or polyester of an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid in which at least two carboxyl groups are joined to contiguous carbon atoms which form double bonds. It has now been observed that activity and stereospecificity increase if at least one of the said carbon atoms, or a carbon atom joined thereto by a double bond, is substituted by a hydrocarbon group having 1-20 carbon atoms. Maleic and fumaric acid esters substituted with the said hydrocarbon group can be mentioned as examples.

  • Patent number: 5413979
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a solid procatalyst composition for a catalyst system intended for the polymerization of olefins, wherein a magnesium halide, such as magnesium chloride, is dissolved and/or slurried in a mono-carboxylic acid alkyl ester, such as ethyl acetate, is impregnated into a support material, dried, treated with an organometallic compound or a silicon compound and thereafter with a transition metal compound. • Patent number: 5385992
Abstract: A method is provided for controlling the dosage of a fluidized polymerizing catalyst into a polymerization reactor. The method comprises mixing a solid polymerization catalyst with wax and feeding the flowing catalyst-wax mixture through a pipe to the dosage pump. The inlet opening of the cylinder of the dosage pump is opened to draw catalyst-wax mixture through the inlet opening by means of the back motion of the piston. The inlet opening is then closed and the outlet opening is opened. Flowing catalyst-wax mixture is then pressed from the cylinder through the outlet opening by means of the back motion of the piston. The outlet opening is then closed. Opening and closing of the inlet and outlet openings is carried out by rotating an intermediate pipe arranged between the cylinder and piston so that a transmission opening in the intermediate pipe moves upon either the inlet or outlet opening. The intermediate pipe surface always covers at least one of the inlet or outlet openings.
