Abstract: A synergistic blade and hub structure for a cooling fan. Helical gussets are provided which proceed from the central hub member adjacent one blade member to the trailing edge of an adjacent blade member. The helical gussets provide structural load paths as well as aerodynamic flow guides. The helical gussets extend axially rearwardly to the trailing edges of preceding blade members and provide structural attachments between the leading and trailing edges of adjacent blade members. Hollow triangular structures are also provided on the rear of the fan structure and the triangulation area provides superior stiffness.

Abstract: A hydraulic clutch assembly for a motor vehicle driveline is provided. The clutch assembly comprises an input member, and output member and a friction clutch pack operably disposed therebetween for controlling torque transfer. A first fluid circuit contains hydraulic based fluid at a first pressure and is in fluid communication with the friction clutch pack for lubrication thereof. A second fluid circuit is in fluid communication with the first fluid circuit for replenishing the second fluid circuit with the hydraulic based fluid at a second pressure that is less than the first pressure. The clutch assembly further comprises a motor and a gear train. A first piston is in fluid communication with the second fluid circuit for delivering the hydraulic based fluid thereto A second piston is translated by the hydraulic based fluid displaced by the first piston to actuate the friction clutch pack.

Abstract: In order for automobile exhaust catalysts to function they must be at operational temperatures. When an engine starts from cold the vehicle, including the exhaust system and any after-treatment device located therein, is at ambient temperature. Since 60% to 80% of the total emissions emitted occur at engine cold start and idle up to 120 seconds, it is imperative that the catalyst function as fast as possible. This invention provides a passive thermatically controlled bypass valve to enable the exhaust flow to bypass the enthalpy loss incurred by driving the turbine wheel of a turbocharger, and thus more rapidly deliver heat to the catalyst or after-treatment.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining bearing play of exhaust-gas-turbocharger friction bearings comprising the following method steps: accelerating the exhaust-gas turbocharger or the body group from standstill to a maximum rotational speed and at the same time registering the vibration acceleration by means of a sensor; determining the constant-tone frequency of the friction bearing at at least one rotational speed; plotting the determined constant-tone frequency in a diagram, in which bearing-play ranges determined experimentally in advance are assigned to constant-tone frequency ranges; and establishing whether or not the determined constant-tone frequency lies in a bearing-play target range.

Abstract: A pivot joint for a single blade spring tensioner or double blade spring tensioner generates a biased friction loss at a pivot joint. The friction torque generated in one direction of joint rotation is greater than the friction torque generated in the opposite direction of rotation. In one embodiment, the direction of torque bias at the joints is used to make the damping of the blade spring greater in compression than in extension. High damping in compression and low damping in extension is a desirable characteristic for a tensioner in most applications. The device may be designed to act as a one-way clutch or as a two-way clutch. The device may also be designed to apply large friction torques only when the joint undergoes large amplitude motions (loss of control).
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for measuring the uniformity of the moments of shiftable friction clutch systems, the individual friction clutch system comprising an adapter at the input end and at least one adapter at the output end, as well as a system for measuring the uniformity of the moments of shiftable friction clutch systems. According to the invention, the friction clutch system is inserted into a measuring apparatus encompassing at least one moment measuring device. The clutch plates that transmit the driving power in a frictionally engaged manner are pressed against each other by means of a test force. The driving motor is driven at a certain test speed. The torque of the driving motor transmitted by means of the friction clutch system is measured within a certain interval with the aid of the moment measuring device.

Abstract: In the present invention, an improved planetary gearset which reduces the amount of vibration transferred from the planetary gearset to a housing. The present invention is a new way to interface the ring gear of a planetary gearset with the housing by incorporating a series of lugs around the ring gear and adjusting the number of lugs and the size and the shape of the lugs. The distribution of these lugs affects the sound levels transferred from the planetary gearset. Additionally, multiple rows of lugs can also be strategically arranged on one ring gear to gain further noise and vibration improvement.

Abstract: To provide a silent chain which makes it possible to further reduce friction loss during operation and to enhance operating efficiency, while also making it possible to reliably prevent assembly errors. A silent chain 1 in which a plurality of links 2 each having a pair of tooth parts 21 which mesh with sprockets and a pair of pin holes 20 are arranged in the lengthwise direction and thickness direction and are linked so as to be able to pivot about one another by linking pins 5 which are inserted into the pin holes 20, and sliding plates 3 are provided. Abstract: A sprocket includes a plurality of teeth spaced about its periphery, roots located between pairs of adjacent teeth, and a cushion ring contacted by a chain engaging the sprocket teeth. The roots have root radii defined as the distance between the center of sprocket and the point along the root closest to the sprocket center in the radial direction. In some embodiments, the roots have three distinct radii. The cushioning material of the cushion ring receives the impact while engaging the chain. In some embodiments, the cushion ring has a contour substantially following the contours of the sprocket teeth geometry. In some embodiments, the cushion ring has a randomized contour to provide predetermined cushioning that varies from tooth to tooth around the sprocket.
