  • Publication number: 20110165984
Abstract: A transmission for an engine or motor with a reduced package size and increased efficiency comprising: an input sprocket, an output sprocket, a chain, and a planetary gear set. The output sprocket is drivingly connecting to the input sprocket through the chain. The output sprocket has a hollow center portion that receives the sun gear of the planetary gear set. The planetary gear set also includes at least two planet gears meshed with the sun gear which are mounted to a fixed planet carrier for driving a differential with a ring gear portion. When the input sprocket is rotated in a first direction, the chain drives the output sprocket and the sun gear in the first direction, and the sun gear drives the planet gears to rotate in a second direction, opposite the first direction, driving the ring gear portion and differential in the second direction.

  • Patent number: 7972234
Abstract: String vibration is reduced without causing friction loss. A silent chain is comprised of a multiple number of link plates, each of which has a pair of tooth portions and pin holes and which are laminated laterally and longitudinally and guide plates which are arranged at outermost positions of the link plates. The link plates and the guide plates are connected by connecting pins. In this construction, some of the guide plates are made heavier than that of other guide plates and are irregularly mixed in a longitudinal direction of the chain. Thus, the natural frequency can be changed in an arbitrary chain span and string vibration may be reduced without causing friction loss.

  • Publication number: 20110155530
Abstract: A composite clutch used to transmit an operational range of torques from a driving member to a driven member includes a friction clutch assembly and a dog clutch assembly. The friction clutch assembly includes a number of first friction clutch members coupled to the driving member and a number of second friction clutch members coupled to the driven member. The number of first friction clutch members and the number of second friction clutch members are selected to transmit torque across a first portion of the operational range of torques. An actuator assembly is operatively coupled to the friction clutch assembly and the dog clutch assembly. The composite clutch may be operated in friction clutch and dog modes to provide improved controllability in lower torque operation.

  • Patent number: 7963380
Abstract: A viscous fan drive having improved pumping efficiency from removing fluid from a fluid operating chamber to a fluid reservoir chamber is achieved by providing a wiper element that is located within the radial clearance between the clutch and the housing that effectively seals leakage paths leading (upstream) and trailing the wiper. The wiper element includes a radial tang that is positioned within a corresponding slot of the cover wall. The wiper element also has a pair of spaced apart arms extending from the radial tang portion each having a radial outer surface that has a similar radius as the cover wall and a radial inner surface has a similar radius as the clutch. The wiper element also preferably includes details designed to seal the radial inner surface to the outer periphery of the clutch during fan drive operation and a locating detail to aid in assembly.

  • Publication number: 20110139567
Abstract: One embodiment includes an annular end plate for a plate assembly of a frictionally operating device, having a friction section, extending in the radial direction, to form a flat front side, which can be turned toward the plate assembly in a first axial direction, and having a rotary driving section, which integrally adjoins the friction section in the first radial direction. The end plate may have a reinforcing section, which integrally adjoins the friction section in the opposite, second, radial direction, the reinforcing section or the first section of the reinforcing section, that adjoining the friction section, being at least partially and preferably completely bent through more than 90° in the opposite, second, axial direction relative to the friction section. The present invention furthermore relates to a frictionally operating device having an end plate of this kind and to a method for the production of an end plate of this kind.

  • Publication number: 20110132116
Abstract: A sprocket unit comprising: a damper mounted on the first shaft with a first face defining a recess and a second face defining chambers for receiving spring loaded weights; a sprocket mounted to the first shaft with a hub defining an aperture and a slot; a front end plate mounted on the shaft with a hub defining an aperture aligned with the aperture of the sprocket; and a spring received within the aperture of the sprocket, the aperture of the front end plate, and the recess of the damper. When the first shaft rotates and firing frequency of the engine coincides with a resonant frequency of the first shaft, the spring loaded weights slide in the chambers of the damper, dampening out the resonant frequency in the first shaft and when the sprocket rotates the spring compresses and extends, reducing torsional load of the first shaft on the second shaft.
