    Abstract: A loudspeaker system designed for ceiling installation. The system includes a woofer, a midrange speaker and a tweeter commonly supported on a rotatable support member which in turn is supported on and is rotatable with respect to an annular rim that is designed to be fixed about an opening in the ceiling. The woofer is aligned at one acute angle and the midrange speaker and tweeter at another acute angle to the annular rim. The mid range speaker and tweeter are partially segregated from the woofer by a baffle.

    Abstract: A planar-type loudspeaker is provided which includes at least two separate, substantially flat, substantially coplanar diaphragms driven by a common drive mechanism. The diaphragms are each of a material and are dimensioned so that each has only a limited number of natural modes of vibration in the frequency band in which it is to operate and that corresponding natural modes for the diaphragms are close enough to achieve beneficial mechanical coupling and acoustics interference so as to provide a generally uniform acoustic pressure response over the selected frequency band. The diaphragms are preferably coupled only through the drive mechanism and it is preferable that each diaphragm have only two natural modes of vibration in the selected frequency band.

    Abstract: A cooling mechanism is provided for an audio speaker, which mechanism includes a plate of a thermally conductive material mounted between the driver mechanism of the speaker and the speaker basket and extending from the voice coil gap to the outside of the speaker. The spacing between this plate and the voice coil is preferably kept as small as possible. The plate is preferably a vent plate having a plurality of radial vents extending along the width of the plate from the voice coil gap side thereof to the side facing the outside of the speaker. Such a vent plate, in addition to providing radiant cooling, also provides cooling via air flow as well as conduction and convection cooling. The vents are sized and shaped so as to minimize any turbulence, and thus any audible air noise.

    Abstract: An audio speaker, the voice coil of which is passively cooled by using at least one of the speaker cone and spider as a bellows to draw air in and to push air out through a first vent passing through the voice coil and a second vent, connected to the first vent through an air flow path, which second vent is formed in a basket of the speaker which is formed of a material having good heat transfer properties. Air drawn into the speaker through the first vent removes heat from the voice coil and is heated thereby. This air is mixed with cooler air drawn in through the second vent which cooler air is expelled through both vents under appropriate action of the bellows. Partially cooled air expelled through the first vent further cools the voice coil and expelled through the second vent, which is also partially heated, has heat removed therefrom as it passes through the second vent formed in the basket, the relatively large area of the basket passed through by this air functioning as a heat sink.

    Abstract: Apparatus for and method of correcting multiple distortions in the form of amplitude variations in and extending the output response of acoustic devices are disclosed. In one embodiment, a set of one or more hollow pipes or conduits of predetermined sizes is positioned adjacent to an acoustical source and oriented such that the axis of each pipe is at an angle to the axis of the sound and at least one open end of each of the pipes intercepts the sound as it is propagated. In an alternative embodiment, comparable results are achieved by positioning a slotted bridge, with one or more elongated slots of predetermined size, adjacent to an acoustical source such that the axis of each slot is oriented substantially perpendicular to the axis of the sound and the sound wave intercepts the open edge of each of the slots.
