When the hair cutting apparatus is turned on, the drive motor (90) is operated only at the setting corresponding to the preset position. The preselector slide means (72) comprises a permanent magnet (100) having associated to it a reed contact (70) which is fixedly accommodated in the casing of the hair cutting apparatus. The use of the reed contact prevents beard hair from entering the interior of the hair cutting apparatus.

The head has a gripping device with at least two diametrically opposed spring-biased gripper jaws which can be pressed against the inside of a hollow cylinder mounted in the casing of the appliance. The jaws operate in conjunction with a control element disposed equiaxially with the cylinder axis. The appliance also has a transmission link between the motor and the cylinder and/or the control element.
