Abstract: A system and method useful in establishing communications between at least two devices determines the presence and location of a plurality of devices at a location associated with at least one wireless data network. The system can establish a communication channel between the devices to communicate without using the internet, and integrates with a VoIP communication infrastructure to alternatively communicate over the internet. In an embodiment, the system determines whether at least one device is capable of communicating with the other devices over the local network or via a VoIP protocol over the internet, and causes another device to display a status indicating which mode of communication is available for communicating with the at least one device.
