  • Patent number: 10286778
Abstract: Outdoor equipment, such as a lawn mower, includes a frame, a riding area, front wheels, and a wheel assembly. One wheel assembly includes an outer plate, a rotating bracket pivotally connected to the outer plate, a primary wheel supported by the rotating bracket, and a secondary wheel supported by the rotating bracket. The rotating bracket is rotatable about a pivot axis, the primary wheel is axially offset from the pivot axis, and the secondary wheel is axially offset from the primary wheel and from the pivot axis. In use, the rotating bracket consistently provides two points of contact (one by the primary wheel and another through the secondary wheel) by rotating automatically about the pivot axis due to gravity and forces transferred through the wheels. This enhanced distribution of forces may provide a more comfortable, cushioned riding experience.

  • Publication number: 20190101092
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes an engine block, an electric motor, a worm coupled to and rotated by the electric motor, a worm gear coupled to and configured to be rotated by the worm, a crankshaft configured to rotate about a crankshaft axis, a flywheel including a flywheel cup having flywheel protrusions, a clutch driven by the worm gear and configured to engage the one or more flywheel protrusions such that the crankshaft is rotated, and an energy storage device electrically coupled to the electric motor. The clutch is configured to disengage from the flywheel protrusions when the rotational speed of the crankshaft exceeds the rotational speed of the worm gear. When the electric motor is activated, the electric motor rotates the worm rotating the worm gear, which causes the clutch to engage the flywheel protrusions, transferring worm gear rotation to the flywheel and the crankshaft to rotate the engine for starting.

  • Publication number: 20190074744
Abstract: A device including a number of printed circuit board layers assembled in a stack that functions as a starting device for an internal combustion engine. Each of the circuit board layers includes a number of loops formed by copper traces on a dielectric substrate and each oriented in a coiled pattern. A rotor, which may take the form of a flywheel, is closely spaced from the stack of printed circuit board layers and includes a series of permanent magnets. When alternating current is supplied to the circuit board layers, the magnetic fields created by the loops induce rotation of the rotor. The device can operate in an alternator mode in which the device generates current as the rotor rotates past the loops on the circuit board during operation of the internal combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 10202957
Abstract: A self-contained starting module for outdoor power equipment that has control circuit and a start button. The starting module includes internal control circuit that can be either microprocessor based or analog. The control circuit receives a start signal from a start button of the starting module. The control circuit monitors for the presence of an enable device and, upon activation of the start button and the presence of the enable device, provides electric power to the electric load of the power equipment. When the start button is depressed for longer than a minimum engagement period, the control circuit initiates operation of the engine. If the start button is pressed for less than the minimum engagement period, the control circuit activates the electric load for an auxiliary period without starting the engine. During engine operation, if the start button is depressed, the operation of the engine is terminated.
