Abstract: Preamble for use within single user, multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. A selected preamble type is employed for use in generating a signal to be transmitted from one communication device to at least one other communication device. Depending upon a desired operational mode, as few as one preamble type, or two or more preamble types may be associated with a given operational mode. When operating in accordance with a given operational mode, a preamble type is selected from available preamble types of an operational mode. A preferred implementation may include two respective preamble types such that one preamble type is used for single user (SU) operation with transmit beamforming weights applied at the beginning of the packet or for open loop SU transmissions only, while the other preamble type, having an multiple user (MU) characteristic, is used for both SU beamforming and MU operations.
Abstract: A packet-based, hierarchical communication system, arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices. The network accommodates real time voice transmission both through dedicated, scheduled bandwidth and through a packet-based routing within the confines and constraints of a data network. Conversion and call processing circuitry is also disclosed which enables access devices and personal computers to adapt voice information between analog voice stream and digital voice packet formats as proves necessary. Routing pathways include wireless spanning tree networks, wide area networks, telephone switching networks, internet, etc., in a manner virtually transparent to the user.
Abstract: Herein described are at least a method and a system for transmitting high speed wireless data from a first communication device to a second communication device. The method comprises using a first physical layer for transmitting management data or control signals between the first and second devices. In one embodiment, the management data may be used to authenticate and assign an appropriate wireless communication channel between the first and second device. The wireless communication channel is established by implementing a second physical layer in each of the first and second devices. The wireless communication channel may be used to transmit the high speed wireless data. The system comprises a first communication device and a second communication device wherein each of the first communication device and the second communication device utilizes a first physical layer and a second physical layer.
Abstract: A premises based multimedia communication system includes a source device that produces multimedia content, a rendering device that presents the multimedia content, and a premises communication network coupling the source device to the rendering device. The system determines a bit error rate of the premises communication network, transfers the multimedia content from the source device to the rendering device, and when the bit error rate exceeds a bit error rate threshold, the system at least partially disables link layer encryption of video frames of the multimedia content transfer. With the link layer operations at least partially disabled, the system can enable, at least partially, content layer encryption operations for the transfer of the multimedia content from the source device to the rendering device.

Abstract: Aspects of a method and system for utilizing tone grouping with Givens rotations to reduce overhead associated with explicit feedback information are presented. In one aspect of the invention, Givens matrices may be utilized to reduce a quantity of information communicated in explicit feedback information via an uplink RF channel. The explicit feedback information may include specifications for a feedback beamforming matrix that may be utilized when transmitting signals via a corresponding downlink RF channel. The feedback beamforming matrix may represent a rotated version of an un-rotated matrix. The Givens matrices may be utilized to apply one or more Givens rotations to un-rotated matrix. The rotated matrix may reduce the quantity of information communicated in the explicit feedback information. The quantity of information communicated in the explicit feedback information may be further reduced by utilizing tone grouping.
Abstract: Device coexistence within single user, multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. Different respective communication devices operating using different respective communication channels having different respective channel bandwidths may be implemented within a given communication system. For example, different respective communication devices may belong to different basic services sets (BSSs) (e.g., a 1 MHz BSS operating using channel bandwidths of 1 MHz, and a 2 MHz BSS operating using channel bandwidths of 2 MHz). To effectuate coexistence among different respective devices operating using different respective channel bandwidths, devices but longing to the 1 MHz BSS monitor for and listen for 2 MHz wide communication activity, and those 1 MHz BSS communication devices defer to any detected communication activity on any portion of the 2 MHz channel.

Abstract: Modulation code set (MCS) and LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coding within multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. Selective operation in accordance with different operational modes is performed. Operation within a first mode may correspond to that which is in full compliance with a given protocol, standard, and/or recommended practice, while operation within a second mode may correspond to that which provides additional/augmented capability and/or functionality with respect to that protocol, standard, and/or recommended practice. Operational modes selectivity may be made between proprietary and non-proprietary modes of operation. All available modulation coding sets (MCSs) may be in employed by providing such multi-mode operation. When operating within one of the operational modes (e.g., proprietary), a signal is generated to include an integer number of data bits per orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol using any desired operation (e.g.

Abstract: In integrated circuit includes a processing module that determines a selected one of the plurality of power modes based on a function being currently performed by at least one non-transceiver module of a host device, and generates a power mode signal based on the selected one of the plurality of power modes. An RF transmitter generates a transmit signal at a selected one of the plurality of operating power levels based on the power mode signal and that operates from at least one transmitter power supply signal generated and selected by a power management circuit in response to the power mode signal.
Abstract: Long training field (LTF) for use within single user, multiple user, multiple access, and/or MIMO wireless communications. Classification of a signal may be performed using one or more LTF's therein. While such one or more LTF's may also be employed for performing functions such as channel estimation, channel characterization, etc., one or more particular characteristics of an LTF extracted from a received signal may also be employed to classify the signal as corresponding to one of a number of possible signal types. For example, such LTF-based classification may be used to classify the respective channel bandwidths associated with the signal (e.g., as being either 1 MHz or 2 MHz channel bandwidth). Generally, one or more LTF fields within one or more signals are employed for any of a number of additional uses beyond or in addition to such functions as channel estimation, channel characterization, etc.
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for non-cryptographic capabilities of a token such as a smartcard to be used as an additional authentication factor when multi-factor authentication is required. Smartcards are configured to generate a transaction code each time a transaction is attempted by the smartcard. The transaction code is dynamic, changing with each transaction, and therefore is used as a one-time password. When a user attempts to access a service or application requiring at least two authentication factors, a secure processor is used to read transaction code from the smartcard. The secure processor establishes a secure communication with the remote computer hosting the service or application. The transaction code can then be encrypted prior to transmission over the public Internet, providing an additional layer of security.
Abstract: A graphics integrated circuit chip is used in a set-top box for controlling a television display. The graphics chip processes analog video input, digital video input, and graphics input. The chip includes a single polyphase filter that preferably provides both anti-flutter filtering and scaling of graphics. Anti-flutter filtering may help reduce display flicker due to the interlaced nature of television displays. The scaling of graphics may be used to convert the normally square pixel aspect ratio of graphics to the normally rectangular pixel aspect ratio of video.

Abstract: Variable modulation within combined LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) coding and modulation coding systems. Variable modulation encoding of LDPC coded symbols is presented. In addition, LDPC encoding, that generates an LDPC variable code rate signal, may also be performed as well. The encoding can generate an LDPC variable code rate and/or modulation signal whose code rate and/or modulation may vary as frequently as on a symbol by symbol basis. Some embodiments employ a common constellation shape for all of the symbols of the signal sequence, yet individual symbols may be mapped according different mappings of the commonly shaped constellation; such an embodiment may be viewed as generating a LDPC variable mapped signal. In general, any one or more of the code rate, constellation shape, or mapping of the individual symbols of a signal sequence may vary as frequently as on a symbol by symbol basis.

Abstract: An integrated circuit (IC) includes an RF receiver having an AGC module that generates an automatic gain control (AGC) signal based on a strength of a received signal, and a low noise amplifier that amplifies the received signal based on the AGC signal. A processing module generates a power mode signal based on the AGC signal, the power mode signal for adjusting a power consumption parameter of the IC based on the power mode signal.
Abstract: Downstream synchronous multichannel (DSSM) communications are provided among a plurality of carriers, each being a completely DOCSIS™ 2.0-compliant downstream. The synchronous multichannels support communications with both DSSM-capable communications nodes and non-DSSM-capable communications nodes (e.g., legacy cable modems). Non-DSSM packets are transmitted on a single channel. DSSM packets are split into multiple pieces, which are transmitted simultaneously on all available channels. Since the physical delay variation (e.g., group delay change) across the adjacent carriers is small (on the order of a symbol time), the multiple pieces arrive at the receiving communications nodes at nearly the same time and can be reassembled with minimal buffering and no packet ordering problems. To avoid causing trouble for the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes, the packet pieces are encapsulated with a header that causes the non-DSSM-capable communications nodes to silently discard them.
