  • Patent number: 8279892
Abstract: A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called “channel bonding.” Channel bonding allows smaller bandwidth upstream channels to be bonded together to create a larger bandwidth pipe.

  • Patent number: 8279788
Abstract: A method and system for stateful negotiation of energy efficient parameters in Layer 2 are provided. In this regard, energy efficiency of communications between a first network device and a second network device may be managed via an exchange of information between the network devices and a verification of whether the information is up-to-date prior to utilizing the information. In various embodiments of the invention, the second network device may generate a decision pertaining to implementing one or more energy efficient techniques and the second network device may send a message to the first network device requesting that the first network device implement the decision. The message sent to the first network device may comprise the decision as well as parameter values utilized to generate the decision. The first network device may receive the decision and the parameter values and may determine whether the received parameter values are up-to-date.

  • Publication number: 20120243648
Abstract: Characterization and assessment of communication channel average group delay variation. A signal having repeated signal components therein is received by a communication device, and that signal undergoes appropriate processing to determine respective amplitude and phase of a number of frequency bins. The phase difference from bin to bin (including respecting unwrapping, and proper normalization) is used to determine the group delay of a communication channel, or portion thereof, as a function of frequency. Multiple respective group delay measurements may be averaged to generate a wideband group delay of the communication channel as a function of frequency. Overlap between different respective band-edge portions of the communication channel may assist in generating a seamless continuous wideband spectrum estimation for use in determining the wideband group delay of the communication channel.

  • Publication number: 20120243597
Abstract: Upstream frequency response measurement and characterization. Signaling is provided between respective communication devices within a communication system. Based upon at least one of these signals, one of the communication devices captures a number of sample sets corresponding thereto at different respective frequencies (e.g., a different respective center frequencies, frequency bands, etc.). Then, spectral analysis is performed with respect to each of the sample sets to generate a respective and corresponding channel response estimate there from. After this number of channel response estimates is determined, they are combined or splice together to generate a full channel response estimate. In implementations including an equalizer, different respective sample sets may correspond to those that have undergone equalization processing and those that have not.

  • Publication number: 20120243622
Abstract: Methods and apparatus that reduce the error rate of a Serial-De-Serial (SerDes) backplane connection are shown. The apparatus may include a receiver verifying a received block of data at the PHY layer. When the received block of data is received correctly, that block can be acknowledged by the receiver to the transmitter, which is also located at the PHY later. Upon detection of an error in a block of data, the receiver may send a negative acknowledge along with the block number, or some other suitable block identifier, of the faulty block to the transmitter. The transmitter may buffer blocks of data, and remove each block from the buffer upon receiving an acknowledgement. Use of the retransmission protocol may be triggered by speed of the connection, the bandwidth of the connection, the detection of too many errors in the connection or any suitable combination of these, or other, parameters.

  • Publication number: 20120243512
Abstract: Methods and systems for dual frequency timing acquisition for compressed WCDMA communication networks may include processing received WCDMA signals. The WCDMA signals, which may be primary synchronization channel signals, may comprise signals transmitted by one base station at one frequency band and by another base station at a different frequency band, during a compressed frame. Samples of the received WCDMA signals from the different base stations may be stored in portions of a memory allocated for signals from each base station. The received WCDMA signals having the first frequency band may be processed via the processing circuitry during a non-compressed frame. The samples corresponding to the signals with the first frequency band during the non-compressed frame may be stored in the memory. The received WCDMA signals may be sampled at a faster rate during the non-compressed frame than during the compressed frame.
