Patent number: 5435584Abstract: A frame having rear suspension system for a two-wheel cycle such as a bicycle or motorbike. The suspension system includes a tubular shock absorber whose outer tubular housing is integrated into a cast or machined lower lug. Several of the main frame tubes and the pedal shaft bearings are also mounted to this lug. By integrating the outer tube of the shock absorber into the tube junction lug, a substantial savings in weight and components is obtained in the chassis assembly while still providing a suspension system.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1994Date of Patent: July 25, 1995Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik F. Patent number: 5332246Abstract: A rear suspension system for a two wheel cycle, such as a bicycle or motorcycle, having a main frame which includes a mount for a steering apparatus to which the front wheel is mounted, and means for mounting a rear frame assembly which the rear wheel is mounted. The vertically pivotable rear frame assembly includes a single primary swingarmwhich extends rearwardly from a pivotal connection on the main frame, which pivot has an axis parallel to the rear wheel axis. The rear wheel is mounted to a primarily vertical junction member, which itself is attached by a second pivotal and parallel connection at the rear end of the main swingarm. A single secondary swingarm is also attached to the vertical junction member, by a third pivotal and parallel connection at some vertical distance below the second pivotal connection, and extends forwardly from the junction at an angle and spacing relative to the main swingarm.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1992Date of Patent: July 26, 1994Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik F. Patent number: 5303795Abstract: A motorcycle having a pair of hinged storage compartments with a front wall, a rear wall, side walls and a floor are pivotally attached to the motorcycle fairing generally midway between the front and rear wheels, forward of the seat, rearward of the steering column and substantially adjacent and on opposite sides of the engine in order to promote a stabilizing influence and maintain aerodynamic balance for the motorcycle.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1993Date of Patent: April 19, 1994Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik Buell

Patent number: 5295702Abstract: A rear suspension system for a two wheel cycle such as a bicycle or motorcycle having a vertically pivotable rear frame assembly to which the rear wheel is mounted. The rear frame assembly includes a primary swingarm which extends downwardly and rearwardly from a pivotable connection on the main frame. A rear wheel fitment is attached at the rear of this primary swingarm. A secondary swingarm is also fixed to the rear wheel fitment, and extends forwardly from the fitment at an angle below to the primary swingarm. The secondary swingarm mounts to the main frame via an attachment which has capability of permitting a change in vertical and horizontal location of the attachment point of the secondary swingarm, necessitated for rotation of the rear frame assembly about the main swingarm pivotable connection, while still providing lateral rigidity.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1992Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik F. Patent number: 4989696Abstract: A front and rear disc brake system for a motorcycle utilizes a first large diameter disc for the front wheel and a second disc of reduced diameter for the rear wheel. The second disc has an outer diameter less than the inner diameter of the first disc so that both discs may be stamped from the same sheet of material with a minimum amount of waste.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1989Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik Buell

Patent number: 4964484Abstract: A motorcycle fairing for enclosing the engine and other components of a motorcycle includes a pair of body portions, each of which has a forward segment and a rear segment connected by a leg receiving recess. Air introduced at the front of the fairing to cool the engine is released from the engine cavity at a point adjacent the leg recesses so that the laminar flow of air around the motorcycle is not disturbed by the leg recesses.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: Buell Motor Company, Inc.Inventor: Erik Buell
