  • Patent number: 9404260
Abstract: A roofing shingle is disclosed comprising a headlap portion with a non-straight longitudinal edge and a buttlap portion with a plurality of tabs with a non-straight longitudinal edge and spaced apart by openings, wherein the non-straight longitudinal edges do not shadow each other laterally across the shingle. A roofing system is disclosed wherein at least a portion of the headlap portion of such shingle from a subsequently installed course overlaps at least a portion of the headlap portion of a shingle from a previously installed course. The maximum headlap overlap dimension is beneath the subsequently installed shingle laterally proximate the openings in the buttlap portion of the subsequently installed shingle. A method for making the shingle is disclosed comprising cutting a sheet of roofing material longitudinally along non-straight lines wherein at least a portion of each formed shingle has a width of about twelve inches.

  • Patent number: 9404263
Abstract: A roofing material comprising an upper surface and a lower surface, wherein the upper surface includes reduced-particle size granules and may further include a reduced-thickness face coating. The thickness of the upper surface is related to the particle size of the granules deposed on the face coating. A smaller particle size granule than those used in traditional roofing shingles is utilized in the upper surface which may allow for a reduced-thickness face coating while not sacrificing the retention of the granules on the surface of the roofing material or desired physical characteristics. The face coating may include a reduced amount of filler material, such as mineral fillers, than face coatings of traditional roofing materials.

  • Patent number: 9371450
Abstract: A finished flake for a roofing material including a metal flake substrate having an emissivity value up to approximately 0.25 and a reflectivity value up to approximately 0.95. A first coating is provided having unpigmented sodium silicate disposed on the substrate, wherein the first coating increases the emissivity value of the substrate and decreases the reflectivity value of the substrate. A second coating is provided having sodium silicate loaded with reflective pigments non-uniformly disposed about the first coating, wherein the finished flake has an emissivity value in excess of approximately 0.75 and a reflectivity value ranging from approximately 0.4 to approximately 0.5.

  • Patent number: 9359765
Abstract: A high speed granule delivery system and method is disclosed for dispensing granules in intermittent patterns onto a moving asphalt coated strip in the manufacture of roofing shingles. The system includes a granule hopper and a rotationally indexable pocket wheel in the bottom of the hopper. A series of pockets are formed in the circumference of the wheel and the pockets are separated by raised lands. A seal on the bottom of the hopper seals against the raised lands as the wheel is indexed. In use, the pockets of the pocket wheel drive through and are filled with granules in the bottom of the hopper. As each pocket is indexed beyond the seal, it is exposed to the moving asphalt coated strip below and its granules fall onto the strip to be embedded in the hot tacky asphalt. Well defined patterns of granules are possible at high production rates.

  • Patent number: 9359014
Abstract: The present disclosure relates, in some embodiments, to thermoplastic-olefin-based roofing membrane comprising a polymer blend. The polymer blend may comprise a thermoplastic olefin elastomer at about 30% to about 75% by weight of the polymer blend and a thermoplastic vulcanizate at about 10% to about 40% by weight of the polymer blend. The polymer blend may further comprise a thermoplastic polyolefin copolymer at about 5% to about 10% by weight of the polymer blend. In some embodiments, the thermoplastic olefin-based roofing membrane may be a single ply membrane configured to remain substantially free of swelling when exposed to an elastomer polymer compound. The thermoplastic olefin-based roofing membrane may be about 20 mils to about 40 mils thick. The thermoplastic-olefin-based roofing membrane may comprise a stretchability of about 14 lbf to about 30 lbf.

  • Patent number: 9340371
Abstract: A servo rotary shingle diverter includes toothed diverter discs disposed along the path of a stream of shingles separated by spaces. In a first or home rotary position, the diverter discs are disposed entirely beneath the shingle path so that shingles pass the diverter discs unimpeded to a first destination. The diverter discs are rotated at the same rate as the moving shingles such that a tooth of the discs moves along with the shingles and into the path of a selected shingle within the gap head of the selected shingle. The discs are stopped when their teeth align to define a ramp and the next selected shingle engages and rides up the ramp and is diverted thereby to a second destination. The diverter discs are then rotated back to their home position. Every other shingle is thus diverted to the second destination while remaining shingles move on to the first destination.
